Wheatus - Teenage Dirtbag

Teenage Dirtbag - Wheatus |

This song has to go down in history as one of the rock greats. This is the band's only hit so far, and it's definitely their signature song. It was released in 2000 and it was Wheatus' first single. Their other singles that they released didn't perform as well on the chart, and soon enough they were unheard of... Apparently, they are still going and the line-up has changed, but I very much doubt they'll ever release another song as good as this one!

The music video is very interesting, it contains a narrative and a performance. The song was written by Brendan B. Brown (AKA BBB). And the music video has Jason Biggs and Mena Suvari, both of which appear in American Pie, which is where people get the misconception that this song is a soundtrack to the films, but the song doesn't even appear on the soundtrack.

I like the storyline although I do think it looks more dreamlike than anything else. I like the fact that the band is a part of the music video as performance wise and plays a small part in the narrative, which is quite clever.

I am a little surprised that the music video blanks out some words but doesn't blank out others, especially since young people could be watching a video like this. I like the fact that actors star in this music video, and it is pretty similar to American Pie so I can understand why people get the misconception. The backdrop film is actually "Loser" which both the actors appeared in.

There really isn't a lot going on, I can't say I like this bit because there isn't a bit that clearly stands out. Apart from when she sings the bridge bit "I got two tickets to Iron Maiden baby". I like the references to Iron Maiden, but there's not much else to comment on.

Overall I like this song, and it'll still be with us for ages and ages, but its music video is neither good nor bad, and so it's difficult to comment on and there doesn't seem to be a lot going on compared to many other music videos.

The Summer Set - Chelsea

January 20, 2012 Critic Jonni 0 Comments

The Summer Set is a whole new band to me. This music video got posted on my Facebook Wall, thanks to DJD, and I watched it for the first time today.

The band consists of Brian Dales, Stephen Gomez, Josh Montgomery, Jess Bowen and John Gomez. The band has a typical pop/rock sound that may appeal to younger audiences. This is the sort of music I'm going off now, I think there's some cheesiness to it and that is probably what dissuades me from liking it.

The song "Chelsea" is written by the band themselves which is supposed to help them connect to the song, but I'm not sure if I like it, I don't know whether it's the song or the fact that the band doesn't connect very well... It's a catchy song and it's currently stuck in my head, but I can't see this band going anywhere.

The music video is heavily narrative, sometimes this is a good thing and at times it's not. In this case I'm sort of in the middle, I like the fact that we're introduced to the characters and we know exactly what is going on, but it's missing something, such as humour? Fine they pull the teacher's wig off but that's funny for a 10 year old. They aren't really appealing to the teenagers which is where they would really get more of an audience from.

There is quite a lot going on, but it's sharp, quick and fast that I find it difficult to follow, and I've watched it three times already. He gets the girl way too quickly and he's not even worked for it, I just don't quite understand how this has all happened within a short space of time... Maybe I'm being too critical.

As for look-a-likes... Well when I first saw the lead singer I could have sworn I had seen him in a TV show or something, and after further searching, I found out that Brian Dales looks a lot like Dustin Milligan (most known for playing Ethan in 90210). As for anyone else, I'm not sure but I bet you can come up with some ideas.

Overall this song is really catchy and has grown on me, but it's still not my sort of thing. The music video needed to be more humorous and easier to follow, however it's got performance and narrative all compact into one, and is one of those videos you could watch a few more times.

30 Seconds To Mars - The Kill

January 19, 2012 Critic Jonni 0 Comments

30 seconds to mars is a band I've enjoyed for quite sometime. Thanks to Tink09 and Hollagram Star I would never have gotten to know this rock band. The band consists of Jared Leto, Shannon Leto and Tomo Miličević, but at the time of this music video there was a 4th member of the band which was Matt Wachter. They have just achieved a place in the Guinness World Records for the "Longest Concert Tour by a Rock Band", after playing a total of 309 gigs over two years.

This song was written by Josh Abraham and 30 Seconds To Mars, which suggests they had some input into the song, which suggests that they have a connection towards the song, and this is exactly why I feel this song is really emotional, and it's exactly what you need in a rock song.

The music video is clever and effective. I like various things, but the fact that there is two of each of the band members, makes you think which ones you have been following and whether their deceptions has changed things. After a second watching you still unsure of whose side you are actually following, and I think this is really interesting.

It's a very clever concept, and they actually managed to put the performance side into the narrative, which is definitely different to any other videos I can think of at the moment. I reckon this band will be around for a lot longer than people think and they have quite a big fan base here in the UK, and I'm pretty sure it's a lot bigger in the US.

The music video is set within a hotel, it is reference to the film "The Shining" which is based on the Stephen King novel, which I haven't read yet, but I'm pretty sure it's amongst my book collection somewhere waiting to be read.

It gives us this surrealistic effect that makes you think that this could be almost a film, and to manage to fit all that into a 5 and a half minute music video is really surprising. It's definitely something I'll be watching again and again, and it's also quite unnerving at times which makes this video stand out from a crowd.

Overall I enjoy this song and it's accompanying music video, it fits perfectly and tends to shock a lot of people as they aren't expecting it to be almost like a film when they first see it. I like the reference to "The Shining" and I find it's extremely interesting when an artist decides to reference a film in their music video, it kind of makes me want to watch the film. I hope you would all agree with my rating.

Jessie J - Domino

January 18, 2012 Critic Jonni 0 Comments

Jessie J (real name Jessica Cornish) is quickly becoming one of the biggest UK female artists, she's already cracked it in America and Australia. Europe is obsessed with her, so where else has she got to go? This is he new song here in the UK, but elsewhere it was released as her fifth single, ahead of "Who You Are". I first heard it in the car, and I was immediately drawn to it, but the radio DJ wouldn't announce who it was, so the next time I heard it I listened out for a name, after having the people in the car send out suggestions as to who was singing. Suggestions were: Katy Perry, Britney Spears, Pixie Lott and Cher Lloyd. We piled out of the car with shocked faces as we weren't expecting Jessie J to be the singer.

The writing credits is surprisingly long, but here goes, the people who wrote this song were Jessica Cornish, Lukasz Gottwald (Dr. Luke), Claude Kelly, Max Martin (collaborates with Dr. Luke quite a bit) and Henry Walter. Claude Kelly has wrote quite a lot of songs, most of them well-known, and has worked with Jessie J quite a few times. This song is definitely a hit, especially since it has already got to number one here in the UK on album downloads only, the official release date is the 27th February 2012. Will she remain on top until the official release date? We'll have to wait and see, but there will be a lot of competition.

Now when I first saw this music video, I was surprised, with this sort of song I was definitely expecting a massive production that will just make us all go WOW. Instead we're left with what looks like a low budget video with little to talk about, and there's really not a lot going on.

When I watched this today, it's the first time I ever noticed something intriguing. No one looks at the background, but for some reason I did and then I noticed that everything was moving in a sort of rhythm as the song suggests. I'm still disappointed at the video, it could have been amazing and perfect all at the same time, but I guess you can't always have one of the best music videos.

Lastly I want to comment on her hair, it looks like it may be a wig, since not so long ago in August 2011 Jessie J confirmed that she would be shaving off her hair to save lives... BUT there has been no official statement that she has yet, which means that in the video she could just have her natural hair. If that's the case then it must take ages to dye it all. However whether she has shaved off her hair or not, they still might be wigs...

Overall it's an amazing song and it's understandable why it's at the top of the charts, and I bet the clubs are using it a lot, but it's music video is dreadful, and I never expected a music video like this to ever be released for this singer, it's definitely her worst video yet, but considering other artists music videos, it's not all bad. But with guidance from CamCam, I came to this rating, I hope many of you agree.

Britney Spears - Oops!... I Did It Again

January 17, 2012 Critic Jonni 0 Comments

Britney Spears has gained quite a few number ones over here in the UK. But hasn't had one since 2004, which was with "Everytime". This single was released as her first single from her album, which is titled the same. She is definitely the biggest pop star around, and I can definitely see her becoming bigger still and I reckon she's going to be around for the rest of her life. The only problem I have is that her last two singles failed to make the UK chart, therefore suggesting she needs to do more promoting here in the UK, if she wishes to get back on our good sides.

This song was written by Max Martin and Rami Yacoub. The former is extremely well-known in the song writing world, and has been mentioned in my blog more times than I can count. As for the latter... Well Rami, has wrote songs for a number of artists, but I wondered where I've seen the name before, and so I went searching and found out that Rami wrote One Direction's "What Makes You Beautiful" with 2 other songwriters. I think Britney felt an immediate connection to this song, even though she personally didn't write it. Her voice is different now to what it is here, I'm not entirely sure if they did anything with it in the studio... But I'm pretty sure, when I saw her on live TV when I was younger, that she had the same tone of voice as she had here.

The music video was all Britney's idea and she wanted to be seen "dancing on Mars", which is exactly what the director has done. I think it's clever and totally out of this world, and no other artist has done anything similar. There are however other music videos that attempted something similar, but they've all failed.

Apparently, according to MTV News archives, that while recording this music video, "part or all of a camera fell" on Britney and she needed four stitches, and she might have been concussed. After four hours rest, she was up and ready to carry on for the music video (for full article Click Here).

I do like the choreography, it's got this kind of twist that makes you intrigued by it, as if she is dancing every single word she sings, and that's exactly what's coming across. I also like the bridge, which is extremely clever, I like the reference to the Titanic film, since the old lady drops the "Heart of The Ocean", and I find it how funny that he went through all that trouble for nothing, and he just shrugs it off? And Moonwalks (wait, I should say Marswalks)? I very much that would happen, especially nowadays.

Overall this music video is a BIG production, it must have taken them ages to come up with everything so perfectly, there's both narrative and performance, and it's the perfect mixture. My favourite bit is when Britney dances on the white pad, as it shows she knows how to dance as all her moves are clear-cut. This was one of the best music videos from 2000, but compared to what is out now, it seems old and unoriginal. My rating is based on what I would have thought of the music video back in 2000.

DJ Fresh Featuring Rita Ora - Hot Right Now

January 16, 2012 Critic Jonni 0 Comments

DJ Fresh is now a household name, he has had a number one with "Louder" and we all know that this song is going to storm the charts! He's real name is Daniel Stein, he has been going since 1996, but became a solo act in 2006. He has released a number of tracks, managing to get on to the UK chart quite a few times. He's UK-wide tour named "Fresh/Live" comprised of 7 dates and all 7 venues got sold out. We all know he's going to be one to look out for this year.

Rita Ora was born in Yugoslavia (present day Kosovo), but moved to the UK in the same year she was born and grew up around London. She graduated from Sylvia Young Theatre School (where a number of artists and actors have graduated from). And has been in a TV Series. But her real passion is for music. She applied for Eurovision: Your Country Needs You, but she withdrew from the competition as she didn't think she was ready. According to the description of this video on YouTube, Rita Ora was signed to Jay-Z's record label after just one phone call, she will be one to look out for this year.

I'm loving this song at the moment, and so are a lot of other people. At this very moment in time the music video has already received 1,730,000 hits and I just know that it's going to receive a load more. Her vocals are amazing and I am looking forward to see if she ever sings a ballad, because if so she's going to blow us all away. She's amazing and I hope this song does well for her.

I first saw this music video on the music channels today, and it kind of surprised me. I watched it from about half way through so I had no idea who it was and I was interested in whose name would appear on the banner at the end. I thought it may have been Amelia Lily (she came third in the most recent X Factor), so I was a little surprised to see DJ Fresh and Rita Ora, and I couldn't wait to review this music video.

There is a lot to like about this music video, it's quirky, it's interesting and very reminiscent of so many different music videos, that it becomes original. It's one of these music videos that as soon as you flip over to another music channel and it's being played you'll recognise it at once.

It reminds me of quite a few music videos, first off Cher Lloyd's "Swagger Jagger", you have the break-dancing, and the boombox, the jacket is like something Cher Lloyd would wear. Then you have Cascada's "Evacuate The Dancefloor", it also had break-dancers and Natalie Horler was singing the song out to the dancers. There's also Ke$ha's "TiK ToK" because both music videos have a boombox. All these comparisons are only small, when looking at the bigger picture (or should I say music video?) it's original, it's different and there's no mistaking it for anything else.

There's a lot to like about this music video. The fact that she uses a megaphone while singing out to the crowd is really clever, during this scene she is also on top of a painted bus, which looks amazing. I like the fact that we see her dancing every now and again, although it would be nice to see a bit more. The professional dancers are incredible, it's the sort of dancing that people dream they could do, and that's why this music video is great to watch.

Overall I love this song, I've got it on repeat, and have done so since I started this review. The accompanying music video is really good, there's links in with the song and the genre as well, which is another key factor. The only criticism I have about it is that it's on a small scale, and there could have been a lot more done with it. Maybe there was and editing changed it up a bit. But I'm going to be nice today, because I'm loving this song and I know a lot of other people love it just as much as I do. If you want to download this song, it'll be available on the 12th February 2012, which should give it enough time to gain popularity. You can purchase the pre-order right now.

New Release: Swedish House Mafia vs. Knife Party - Antidote

January 16, 2012 Critic Jonni 0 Comments

Now before I start, I have to announce that there are two versions. There is the clean version and the explicit version. Based on the fact that anyone can access this blog, I have decided to use the clean version, however I shall be using references to the explicit one.

Swedish House Mafia is a house/dance genre band, they comprise of 3 DJs who are Axwell, Steve Angello and Sebastian Ingrosso. I have already reviewed one of their music videos which was "Save The World" and I loved the music video to that one... This one... Not so much. The other band is Knife Party, they consist of Rob Swire and Gareth McGrillen, you may recognise those names because they are both in the band "Pendulum". This is a side project and according to Rob Swire has NOTHING to do with Pendulum. I'm interested in where this side-project will go, but to be honest if it turns out anything like this one I'm not going to be all that excited.

The song has already been released across Europe and in the US. It hasn't done that well, just making number 13 in Finland and number 23 in Sweden (their home country), and number 51 in the Netherlands. Personally, I don't think think it will do too well here in the UK. So far Swedish House Mafia has gained three top ten hits in a row, this would make it a fourth, but I very much doubt it'll get there.

So is it the song I don't like or the music video? To be honest, I think it's both, the clean music video doesn't make any sense so I watched the explicit version, and I swear I'm going to have nightmares tonight, there's just something about people wearing masks, that just gives me the creeps. The song is okay, I can see it hitting off in certain clubs, but I don't see it being that big compared to their other ones, and I think the music video has a lot to do with that.

The music video is set in a Japanese Strip Club, to be honest this isn't much of a big deal both in the clean version and the explicit version. And to be honest I like how the clean version has been edited. It kind of reminds me of the usual sort of dance/house music videos, with hardly anything new that stands out, except the robbing of the case and the horrible scary masks.

The storyline makes sense in the explicit version, but I still don't understand why they took it and why they did what they did. Maybe they were trying to uncover what was going on in there and then bring it to the police, maybe they were the bad guys and they thought that they needed to do this, maybe they thought this will help save the girls, or they may have been just greedy and wanted the case. I will never know and I don't like the narrative storyline behind it. You got any more ideas? Post them below in the comments.

Overall the song is okay and I can see why others will like it. The accompanying music video is average but also hints that it's different. Although I don't like it, I can appreciate where they're coming from and why they've done it. If it was just my opinions I took into account I'd give it a 1 star. However as a whole I can see why others will like it and understand it better, so I'm going to give it an average rating.

The All-American Rejects - Dirty Little Secret

January 15, 2012 Critic Jonni 0 Comments

The All-American Rejects are up for today's Sunday revisit. This song made an impression on me, the first time I heard it I loved it. Now I'm kind of a fan of the band, and I hope I still will be with their new release coming out very soon. I have never seen the music video before now and I'm quite surprised I that I haven't.

The song is written by Nick Wheeler and Tyson Ritter, two of the four members of the band, the other members being Mike Kennerty and Chris Gaylor. I like the fact that they write their own songs as it gives across a lot of emotion, which is exactly what this song does.

The music video is very clever, everybody I know who has watched this video on YouTube has always paused it so that they can read every single postcard that appears on screen. I do believe that we aren't given enough time to read them all, which is really annoying when you're half-way through a postcard and it switches to the next one, so pausing is needed, but when you do click pause the music stops which is also not good.

The band are performing as well in the video, this is good as you see they are full of energy. I like the fact that they've enlarged the postcards and put it up almost like a collage, and I think it's pretty clever what the cameramen/women do (or whether it's the editors I don't know), but you could be watching a postcard and as it zooms out you see the band playing rather than the person behind the postcard from the previous scene.

There are some frightening, shocking, and clearly disturbing postcards that are shown, I haven't read them all, but the ones that I have, has surprised and startled me. Some of them are on the ridiculous side, that makes you think "as if somebody would do that", but I presume it's always possible, which is clearly a frightening thought.

There isn't a lot else to talk about this video, it has the right amount of narrative (which are the people holding up the postcard/their dirty little secret), and the performance is what we all expect from rock bands. The video reminds me a bit or My Chemical Romance's "Sing It (For Japan)", although there are obvious differences.

Avril Lavigne - I'm With You

January 14, 2012 Critic Jonni 0 Comments

This is the sort of Avril song we all miss. Avril Lavigne has been having trouble lately with her most recent album. It's extremely emotional and really good if people would give it a chance, but people aren't and so the album and it's singles didn't chart very high here in the UK. She is currently working on a fifth studio album, which I'm really looking forward for, and apparently she is exploring and combining her old sound with her new sound.

This song was released in 2002, making it 10 years old. It was written by Avril Lavigne, Scott Spock, Lauren Christy and Graham Edwards, the latter three making up the production team "The Matrix". Again this is another track penned by Avril, and suggests that she means every word she sings. It's definitely emotional as you can hear it in her voice. The song only got to number 7 in the UK charts (Avril has yet to gain a number one single here in the UK), and it re-entered at number 51 last year thanks to Amelia Lily singing the song on The X Factor.

The music video is similar to Losing Grip's music video, however Losing Grip was filmed after I'm With You, so they may have thought the songs were similar. Again the backing band appears, but this time they only get one scene each as Avril is walking down the road. At the time the backing band was (in order of appearance): Matt Brann (he's playing the drums on his legs...), Evan Taubenfeld, Jesse Colburn and Charlie Moniz. Recently they have all moved on and are currently doing their own separate projects.

I love the fact that it's very emotional and she's singing her heart out, it's subtle and interesting. But there are similarities between this one and Losing Grip's music video, which suggests the same footage? Or the same director, or Losing Grip was done quicker and from ideas of this music video.

The song has been used by Rihanna for her track "Cheers (Drink To That)", and Avril thought she did a good job with it and also featured in Rihanna's music video.

There isn't a lot more to talk about, I think it's heart-felt and interesting and something that Avril should consider when recording her new album, as this is definitely raw emotion. I like the music video, it's subtle but interesting at the same time, and I hope you all agree with my rating.

Tinchy Stryder Featuring Pixie Lott - Bright Lights

January 13, 2012 Critic Jonni 0 Comments

Tynchy Stryder (real name Kwasi Danquah III) has been hitting out some big hits recently, and his career seems pretty stable, but that's all there is to it, he's not a worldwide known star and it's going to be difficult if that's who he wants to be. He almost appeared in Celebrity Big Brother 2012, but he apparently pulled out as he didn't think it was the right thing for him to do. But with this year's celebrities gaining more TV ratings than last year... Was it right for his career, that he pulled out? I guess we'll never know. But since then this song has emerged, heightening my interest as it's a collaboration with Pixie Lott. Pixie Lott (real name Victoria Lott) has become one of the biggest UK female artists as of 2011, and I can see her getting better and better. She has also recorded another version to this song: "Bright Lights (Good Life) Part II" and it appears on her second studio album "Young. Foolish. Happy".

I first heard this song on Pixie's album and thought I recognised it from somewhere, although until now I hadn't got a clue what other song it sounded like; but thanks to a YouTube comment I realised why this song is so familiar. B.o.B and Hayley Williams song "Airplanes" is pretty much the same as this song, and that is why I like it. It's catchy and full of passion and feeling, and it could be considered as the UK's answer to Airplanes, well it took us long enough didn't it?

I like the music video, again it's similar to Airplanes, however maybe I'm just looking into it too much, what makes it different is the fact that Pixie Lott is with Tinchy Stryder and I also like the fact that she shows off her vocals, even though she only sings the chorus, she does hop in and out of the rapping with Tinchy.

I like the use of images that are all from Tinchy Stryder. He is rapping about his life, so it's obvious he is going to use pictures from his past. This makes it more real and it gets the message across.

Overall it's a great song and I'm expecting it to chart quite high when it's released on the 27th February. The music video is average, it's one of those videos that you'd watch if there isn't anything better on the music channels, however the song is really catchy and clearly makes up for the video. There isn't a lot going on, so there isn't a lot I can comment on, so I'm giving an average rating for an average video.

Alyssa Reid Featuring P. Reign - Alone Again

January 12, 2012 Critic Jonni 0 Comments

Alyssa Reid is from Canada, but it looks like she's going to be known worldwide; when I first saw her I thought it was Ashley Tisdale, I was definitely wrong, but they do look similar. Alyssa Reid is hoping to break into the UK charts soon and with the extensive radio and music channel play she keeps getting, it looks like she's going to be another singer we are going to look out for. She is only 18, and I'm 2 months older than her, yet she seems really mature at times, and I never would have guessed she was my age. She releases this track on my birthday (29th January), but she'll have stiff competition from Kelly Clarkson (whose song "Stronger" has already charted from Album downloads only). So this looks like it's set to be a big chart battle, but who will come on top?

The song takes a large sample from Heart's "Alone" (made notably famous by Celine Dion). Alyssa Reid wrote the addition lyrics to the song, which makes it feel original, and I have to admit I had to think long and hard what the original song was, as this single has totally messed around with it to make it modern. And it looks like it's going to be one big hit.

The music video is interesting. It's on a small scale and the narrative could be bigger, but if it were it would make this video not so good. Alyssa Reid is singing her heart out, and the song is musically great, but it's subtle, and luckily for us the video is just as subtle.

I like the narrative, it tells a story in a short space of time and we really connect to it, the reason for this is because most people can relate to it as they have probably been through it. Others can clearly only imagine. My friend Dolly even quoted the lyrics on Facebook, she knows what it feels like and loves the song because of it.

I like how all the characters are together and then something happens, whether that's an argument or just not being there when they want you to, and they become "alone". But then when you think all hope is gone, they all get back together and enjoy one another's company.

The performance side of it is interesting, the fact that you see Alyssa Reid playing the piano shows she is also musically talented and you can tell every single word she sings she really means it, and I think that is what draws me to the video more than anything else.

A little info on P. Reign. He is a rapper from Canada, and has released a few records already, however none amassing to anything this big. Some people think rappers are all the same, some may even go out of their way to tell rappers that they've ruined this or that song. I feel hurt that somebody would do such a thing, rapping is a style of music, if it wasn't it wouldn't get into the charts, if you don't like that genre of music then there is no need to judge it.

Overall this is one catchy song and one engaging music video that is the perfect subtlety. I can see this song climbing high up in the UK charts and I have my fingers crossed it does just that. The music video links perfectly, it has enough narrative with enough performance to make it a great music video.

Rizzle Kicks - Mama Do The Hump

January 11, 2012 Critic Jonni 0 Comments

Mama Do the Hump - Rizzle Kicks |

Rizzle Kicks are a 2-piece hip-hop band that I'm not entirely sure whether I like or not, sometimes I do (such as this song), whereas others I'm not so sure about. They comprise of Jordan "Rizzle" Stephens and Harley "Sylvester" Alexander-Sule. I have no idea where they got their name from, but after a bit of searching, I found out, thanks to pyromag.com. Apparently Rizzle used to be called Green Rizla at school as people thought he was part of the crew. Green Rizla soon became Rizzle and it looks like it stuck. Both of them played football as school so they decided upon kicks, and that's how Rizzle Kicks came about. To see the rest of the interview Click here

This song is their fourth official single, and I think it is my favourite one they've released, and I'm not the only one. Camcam has fallen in love with it, and he even did "The Hump" in the car... It is currently their highest chart position, but will it go even higher? Will it make the top spot? That is something we're going to have to keep an eye on. I hope it does, it's extremely catchy, but with the 2 songs that are above them in the chart, it doesn't look possible.

The music video is very clever. It contains Rizzle's mother and auntie miming the lyrics and not their respective parents as we at first thought. They perform it so well that anyone who hadn't seen it before and had no idea who the Rizzle Kicks were, would think the people miming are Rizzle Kicks. I can't help laughing at the miming, and I think it is just great. There is also an appearance from a certain celebrity, known as James Corden.

Now, what is "The Hump"? It is a dance move made up by the Rizzle Kicks while they were on stage performing. They were just messing about and came to find this dance move. There are online videos that you can find that will show you how to "do The Hump".

Overall, the music video is simple with very little going on; however, it is clever and different and is really funny at times. The people in the music video all do "The Hump" differently, I just think you have to find your own way of doing it. Purely for originality and great humour, I feel this music video deserves this rating. My only problem is that they could have included a bit more and made it more humorous.

Eric Saade Featuring Dev - Hotter Than Fire

January 10, 2012 Critic Jonni 0 Comments

Eric Saade first came to my attention in Eurovision 2011. Since then he has managed to get a UK record label, and his music videos have been played quite a lot on the music channels. I have so far reviewed one of his music videos which was "Hearts In The Air", and I have a feeling if this song and music video are played enough, it will grab enough attention to get the song on to the UK chart, but as of yet there is no official release date, so we can't be certain if he'll chart or not. The collaboration with Dev (real name Devin Tailes) is amazing, her vocals add to the track superbly and it makes this song more notable to the UK audience, which I presume he is aiming for.

The song was written by Eric Saade, Jason Gill and Julimar Santos (also known to us as J-Son). As I've said a number of times, I like the fact that it's written by the artist as it shows they have a connection to the song, and they really mean every single word they are saying. This song is one of those songs that I have to listen to over and over again until I finally like it, but thanks to the UK music channels, it looks like I've already listened to it quite a few times, as it has already grown on me.

The music video is interesting, at first sight people may dislike it, I know I did, and I vowed never to watch it again. I happen to have broken that vow a number of times. It's clever because you end up seeing things you never even noticed the first time round. From a media student, such as myself, you learn to respect the many different camera angles used, and this music video reminds me of the many videos I've watched in Media Studies that tells you what the camera angles are and which ones you can use and what they are all called. It wouldn't surprise me if there was someone out there who has broken this music video down and is using it to show media students what camera angles are out there.

Now when I saw this music video on the TV and on the computer, I presumed that some of the footage contained a stunt double or a professional dancer or something similar. Scenes such as when he's dancing on the table, and when the camera isn't focused on his face. In the table scene we only see part of his legs and his feet as he is moving about. Another scene was when he goes into the room with the light bulbs and he's dancing there and the camera is above him, he doesn't look up or anything so all we see is his hat. However I watched the "Behind the Scenes" video, and although they speak Swedish I can still watch the video, and in fact, when he's on the table, they have a wire attached to him, so that he can go higher, it was probably how he got onto the table in the first place. (I have added the "Making of..." video for you, that's if you fancy hearing them speak Swedish).

I like the fact that Dev is in the TV screens, the reason I can think of as to why they've done this is probably because they didn't have a lot of footage from her when she recorded her part (this may not be true, this is just my thoughts). So the fact that she's in the TVs suggest that some of the video footage of Dev was repeated every now and then. This is clever because we don't even realise.

Overall it's a good music video, although why some of the rooms are the way they are I'm not sure... Why is there a room full of light bulbs? It's one of those things I'll never get to understand. I love the sign, right at the end, it says SAADE and then changes into DEV, which is extremely clever, and I only just noticed it. This is definitely the sort of music video that will reveal new things to me every time I watch it. The song is very catchy and I hope Eric Saade manages to get into the UK chart, whenever this song is released.

The All-American Rejects - Gives You Hell

January 09, 2012 Critic Jonni 0 Comments

I've been a fan of this band since their single "Dirty Little Secret". I personally think this is one of their best songs they ever performed. The band is set to make a come-back this year, which I'm really excited about, and I really hope that it manages to give them the credibility they clearly deserve. The All-American Rejects are a pop/rock band that consists of Tyson Ritter, Nick Wheeler, Mike Kennerty and Chris Gaylor. This song got covered on hit TV show Glee, and I hope they are set to make another big hit like this one was.

"Gives You Hell" was written by Nick Wheeler and Tyson Ritter. This is what you sort of expect from a band, to actually write their own songs. It is very rare to come across a rock band who doesn't. Which shows they have a connection to the song, and everything they are singing is what they truly feel.

I love this music video. The one I've displayed above is the "Full Narrative" version. There are three different versions, the normal one, the "Full Performance" version, and this one. The reason why I chose to show this one is because this is the music video the UK music channels show and therefore it wouldn't be right if I did another one.

This music video has got it all, the performance and the funny, quirky storyline. The narrative is all about two neighbours who don't really like one-another and tend to annoy one another, one in the morning, the other at night. The ending is a little confusing, although it's understandable, I don't see the reasons behind it.

I like the idea that Tyson Ritter is both the goody two shoes and the out-of-control rocker, it creates the effect that he has two personalities, and they are both really good. I like the idea that they throw the song at one another, and I think that is what makes this really exciting and interesting.

I like the fact that it's interesting, you don't know what's going to happen next, even after watching it over and over again. You are totally expecting something different each time. You can't help but laugh, because it's so funny. And I think it must have been difficult to film because Tyson Ritter had to be two different characters.

Overall this is one of their best songs and the music video is just out-standing. I can't fault it and I laugh every time I watch it, I just hope I'm not the only one. I'm looking forward to what they will release this year, and I have my fingers crossed that they do really well in the charts.

New Release: Nicola Roberts - Yo-Yo

January 09, 2012 Critic Jonni 0 Comments

Nicola Roberts first came to light in Popstars: The Rivals. I remember being a young boy when it was shown, and I was backing her all the way, I may have been a bit biased, but I liked her, and I was so happy she got into Girls Aloud. Girls Aloud had big success here in the UK, they beat "the rivals" on the show who were "One True Voice", who didn't get very far. Girls Aloud is currently on hiatus, the band members are: Nicola Roberts, Cheryl Cole, Kimberly Walsh, Nadine Coyle and Sarah Harding. They are all pursuing solo projects at the moment, but rumours have come up that they will reform this year (2012) for a one-off tour and maybe an album to mark their 10 year anniversary. Will they ever get back for good? No one knows, but it seems doubtful at this point.

Yo-Yo is Nicola Robert's third single taken from her album "Cinderella's Eyes". It was written by Nicola Roberts, Dimitri Tikovoi and Maya von Doll. Nicola is currently working on her second studio album, so it is quite possible that this will be her last single from her album. However I'm really hoping that she releases "Sticks + Stones" as that track is very emotional and just perfect to listen to.

This is different for Nicola Roberts. The music video has a narrative and that is the centre piece. It kind of gives us a new side of Nicola and lets us judge whether she can act or not, and in fact she can, and it will become more and more stronger as time goes by (I wonder if she got a bit of help from band mate Sarah Harding, who has gone on to act in St. Trinian's 2).

The storyline is about a relationship, and Nicola really likes him, she likes being with him and really wants to make it work. But he's out all the time and then she sees him with another girl. She gets mad and throws flowers and a plate, she is upset which is the use of the shower. But she wants to make it work and she has no idea what she should do next.

A lot of people have commented saying she looks like Blake Lively, for those of you who don't know who Blake Lively is, she's the main character in Gossip Girl, and has been in a number of films, in which she has also won awards for. I have to admit, I think they do lookalike, but I feel Nicola Roberts should go back to ginger, because that's her style and she's "team ginge". More Look-a-likes are, the guy Nicola is with, he looks like Rodrigo Lopes who entered UK Big Brother 2009. Also the person playing with the yo-yo at the start apparently looks a bit like Siva Kaneswaran (one of five band members of The Wanted).

Overall the music video is great, it doesn't make you think wow, but it is really good. I like the start, with the use of the yo-yo to introduce us to the song, which is similar to the start of "Beat of My Drum". I hope to see this song chart this week, as it really does deserve it, and I hope Nicola Roberts gets more success in the near future. And I'm looking forward for that second studio album.

September - Satellites

January 08, 2012 Critic Jonni 0 Comments

Before today I have never seen this music video. Every time I come to review a music video, I look at the YouTube comments, and in this case I was a little on the dubious side, and once I clicked play, I was thinking no no no no no no no. But more on that later.

I have been struggling to come up for a Sunday re-visit. I've always been worried about doing this music video, mainly because I hadn't seen it before today. And to be honest it's a good job I haven't. This song was September's first UK release and managed to get to number 96. She subsequently swapped labels, and after 2 singles and an album with this new UK label, she swapped back again. She is becoming more and more popular and she's on the edge of her career, she could fall down and disappear from the UK altogether, which will be a big loss to us, or she could have another big hit that will secure her place in the UK. But I can feel that this is just around the corner, and I'm hoping it'll be the latter as I love her new music.

The song was written by Jonas von der Burg, Anoo Bhagavan and Niklas von der Burg. I'm never quite sure what to make of artists who usually have their songs written by other people, however September (or real name Petra Marklund) has recently started songwriting, which suggests that she wants to believe in the music she sings. This song is about being knocked down and you have to get back up again and move on. (The way I've just phrased that reminds me of Chumbawamba's "Tubthumping"). "Satellites" is surprisingly catchy, and I think the reason for that is because the chorus is repeated quite a few times.

The music video is definitely a no no. It's dreadful. Full stop. It's totally low budget, I don't like the fact that they covered her eyes while they tanned her, and then to paint around her eyes the colours of her scarfs, or using masks. It just seems pointless and I don't really understand what it has got to do with the song. I can excuse the yellow bit because a "beautiful morning" involves the sun, but the other colours just don't make sense, unless they are on about a sunrise, which the song doesn't state.

The song is about starting all over again pretty much like the sun; as it rises and then it sets, to rise all over again. However the sun has nothing to be ashamed off, whereas in the song it's about something that's happened that makes you feel like the whole world is to crash down around you.

This is a very simple, low-budget music video that isn't as good as her most recent music videos. The song got a very low chart performance, could that be because of the music video, or were the UK music channels not showing the music video often because they didn't like it either? I just find it pointless with only a little understanding here and there.

Blake Shelton - Footloose

January 07, 2012 Critic Jonni 0 Comments

As you may already be aware of, I have seen the new "Footloose (2011 film)" a total of two times now, and I reckon that it'll be one of those films that you can watch again and again and again, and eventually you'll lose count of how many times you have seen it. I have already reviewed one song that was released from the soundtrack which was Big & Rich Featuring Gretchen Wilson "Fake I.D.". I wasn't aware of the fact that this song was released, back then I was trying to find the music video to this song since it is the soundtrack to the film, but a music video wasn't released. Then a few weeks after reviewing "Fake I.D." Edges posted the music video on Facebook, and I've been looking forward to the day that I will review it.

Blake Shelton is a well known American country artist. he has been going since 2001, but there really hasn't ever been a place for country music in the UK, with only a few rarities managing to get into the chart. But now country is becoming much more stronger, we actually have a country chart. Not only that but I believe we have Taylor Swift to thank for managing to make Country popular again. She has lined the path for many country artists with Lady Antebellum and Sugarland appearing in the chart recently. But will Blake Shelton have a go at it? We'll just have to wait and see won't we? He hit the US TV screens as a judge/coach in the US version of The Voice, where he starred alongside Cee Lo Green (also sung a track for "Footloose"), Christina Aguilera and Adam Levine (lead singer of Maroon 5). So what's next for this country singer? Maybe a crack at the UK chart?

I like the music video, it uses footage from the film, but in a whole different aspect that surprised me when I watched this for the first time. The song was written by Kenny Loggins and Dean Pitchford. Kenny Loggins originally sung the song for the original version of Footloose. He was asked to be a part of the 2011 film, but he refused, but later, after the film's release he was quoted as saying he regrets not helping.

I like the use of the film being shown in a drive-in cinema. I've never been to a drive-in cinema before, but I've seen it a lot in films and on TV shows. I like that idea, I don't think I've come across any other music video soundtrack to have the film being screened behind the artist.

I also like the fact that it tells a story,. that is well put together and relates well with the song's storyline. I also like how people come out of their cars and start dancing rather than watching the film. There is just enough film footage and just enough of Blake Shelton's performance at the Drive-In cinema, I think they lined it up well and haven't shown too much of anything.

Overall the music video fits in perfectly with the song and is pretty good to watch. I wish I was there, it looks like fun. I like the whole idea of screening the film with the performance. So I have no choice but to give it this rating.

Avril Lavigne - Losing Grip

January 06, 2012 Critic Jonni 0 Comments

Avril Lavigne has released a number of singles and albums, she has recently came back to music and she hasn't performed that well in the charts, unfortunately. Even though the songs are really emotional and much more powerful. She is currently working on her fifth studio album, which I'm really excited about.

This single was taken from her first ever album "Let Go", it was written by Avril Lavigne and Clif Magness. It is about losing grip with her boyfriend as they were not meant to be. The lyrics are very personal and you can tell she means every single one of them. She has this distinct voice to this song that makes "Losing Grip" stand out from the others on the album, she sounds a lot like her fellow Canadian, Alanis Morissette and it's really powerful. Furthermore when she sings "crying out loud, I'm crying out loud" her voice reminds me of Amy Studt's and I'm pretty sure those lyrics (or something along those lines) are used in one of Amy Studt's songs, but I've been searching and I don't know where.

The music video is short, and simple it is a live performance which shows her energetic vibe when she's on tours. This is to make us feel like we're actually there. And it also shows that what she is singing comes straight from her heart. Also she has 4 of her backing band with her, who are all attempting to become more well-known, and are no longer Avril Lavigne's backing band. The people who appear on stage with her are Jesse Colburn (who has wrote quite a few songs at the moment), Evan Taubenfeld (Singer and songwriter, and collaborated with Avril on her new album, and Avril collaborated with him on his new album), Matt Brann (since leaving the band he has helped other bands with their albums) and Charlie Moniz (who isn't doing much as far as I'm aware of).

I like the idea of also having Avril Lavigne in the crowd, pushing her way through, and herself being pushed. It links in well with the song, because it suggests the sort of relationship she is in where they keep trying and one keeps pushing and then they push back, but nothing is working. Also she is alone, usually at a concert you are with someone, so in theory you could say she had the tickets but her boyfriend didn't turn up so she had to go it alone. But then she sees her boyfriend in the crowd (well we presume it's her boyfriend, otherwise she's punching a complete stranger).

Overall it's a great song, and I'm sure I could listen to it over and over again. The music video is average, and can be compared to "What The Hell" as she also crowd surfs and does a little gig in that video too. But there really isn't a lot going on, but it's subtle and interesting at the same time.

JoJo - Too Little Too Late

January 05, 2012 Critic Jonni 0 Comments

JoJo (real name Joanna Levesque) is one of these singers who was pushed into the music scene at such a young age, usually there comes problems with this sort of thing such as Britney Spears, Lindsay Lohan and Billie Piper. But JoJo has had no problems whatsoever, apart from her record company, which is pretty minor compared to the other young artists. She is making a comeback slowly, but surely with a new brilliant single "Disaster", it's music video has just been released to the UK, so people fear not, it looks like it will be released here in the UK, in a few months time.

This song was written by Josh Alexander, Billy Steinberg and Ruth-Anne Cunningham. They aren't as well known as others, but Billy Steinberg has worked with a number of artists, and Ruth-Anne Cunningham has worked with the likes of Pixie Lott and other well-known UK artists, she is also a singer and has had success in Ireland. The song is very emotional and JoJo has connected with the song amazingly as her vocals are really good, you would think she had some writing credits but she doesn't and this quite surprises me as the music video is also very emotional.

The music video links in with the song really well, it is about being disappointed and getting over your first love, and the music video displays that perfectly. I like the fact that it relates well and although there isn't a lot going on, it is emotionally interesting, and it seems very real.

I like the start, the way they talk about what they saw and JoJo even starts off by saying she's disappointed. This is key at the start of the music video, as you are more aware of the feelings they feel for each other right from the start. I also like the fact that it starts to rain when she puts the teddy in the bin. It's not the teddy's fault, and it must be terribly lonely in the bin. But the significance of it shows that she doesn't want to be reminded.

A lot of people have commented on the showing of Football (or should I say soccer as a lot of countries call it). I personally don't know what they are complaining about. Americans play Soccer as well, they even made a few films to do with it (called "She's The Man" and "Goal" amongst others). And I know a lot of people in the UK make jokes about football and America, but it's still a sport recognised all over the world, so there's no need for complaints.

Overall I really like the song, and the accompanying music video fits perfectly. I like the way everything works out incredibly and the emotion is sent our way. I can't say anything bad about this music video, so I think it deserves this rating.

Lady Gaga Featuring Colby O'Donis - Just Dance

January 04, 2012 Critic Jonni 0 Comments

Lady Gaga (real name Stefani Germanotta) has quickly become one of the most well-known singers, in just a few years. We all know what to expect from her, but there was a time when she was the new girl on the block, she may not have been as extravagant as she is now, but she was still surprisingly shocking. This is her first ever single release, and this music video was her first one. However, she had been in the music industry for quite some time, developing her song writing. She was nicknamed Lady Gaga after Queen's song "Radio Ga Ga" because a lot of her songs were appearing in the charts (however this story may not be true since there are others saying the star name was created during a promotional meeting).

This song was written by Lady GaGa, Akon (who appears in this music video) and RedOne. All three are well-known. Akon has had a number of hits here in the UK, and RedOne has produced so many well-known songs, that I'm sure if you looked at the credits you'll know at least one of the tracks. This song is amazing and surprisingly shows off Lady Gaga's vocals straight away. The song is about having a good time no matter what you're going through, to do whatever will make you happy and forget about your worries for just a little while.

I have to admit something here. When I first came across this music video back in 2008, I had never heard of it, but I found it quite catchy. So I tried to guess who it was, and I thought it might have been Christina Aguilera, but then I thought it seemed a bit over the top for her, she's been there and done that. So I was interested to see the banner coming up and it said: Lady Gaga. That was the first time I ever saw her and this music video, and I knew that song was going to chart high.

I like the fact that it links in well with the song, people are dancing, and having fun and just forgetting about any problems they may have. Lady Gaga is given choreography, which she performs well, but the dancing is very limited compared to her most recent music videos.

I personally find the paddling pool, a bit over the top, there was no exact need to it, but by now we shouldn't be surprised at what is included in Lady Gaga's music videos. We also have Colby O'Donis singing in the music video; he hasn't had much success lately, and there's no sign of him here in the UK. Not only that but Akon makes a guest appearance along with Space Cowboy, who is a DJ and has remixed quite a few Lady Gaga tracks.

Well, that's all I have to say, there are minor things going on in this music video, but that is what makes it good, and house parties tend to be filmed pretty well in music videos. It links perfectly which is good since I don't think it would've made number one in the UK otherwise. I have dropped a star because of the pool, which has next to no links and wasn't needed.

September - Party In My Head

January 03, 2012 Critic Jonni 0 Comments

September (real name Petra Marklund) is quickly becoming known here in the UK. She has released a number of singles, and one album, but in the process, she has swapped record labels. She first released "Satellites" under All Around the World records back in 2006 it got to number 96. She then swapped to Hard2beat (now called Dance Nation) for "Cry for You" and "Can't Get Over" which got number 5 and number 15 respectively. "Until I Die" was up for release, but then got cancelled. And her album "Cry For You" got a download only release. She has recently swapped back over to All Around The World Records, and has already released "Me and My Microphone" which has yet to chart, unfortunately. Now she's trying again, with a just as catchy song called "Party In My Head", which has received quite a bit of music channel play so far, including Dance Nation music channel, which is surprising, as you would've expected the label to decide not to show it. But is this enough for September? There is no release date as of yet, and no promotion in the UK, could this be another fail for this great singer?

This song was written by Wayne Hector, Lucas Secon, Daniel Davidsen, Peter Wallevik, Mich Hansen. Wayne and Lucas have both written a lot of songs, most of them well known in the UK, furthermore, they come from the UK, could this be September's way of trying to make it here? The others are known here and there. I like the song, I can imagine it being in all the clubs and I just want to dance when I hear it, I do have my fingers crossed that this manages to chart.

The music video I've displayed is a bit different to the one that is shown on the music channels here in the UK. This is typical of All Around The World records, as they have done this with a few of their artists such as Inna and Alexandra Stan. Yet again I prefer this music video than the one we're given, as it explains a lot more of what is going on. The music video links both indirectly and directly to the song, which is exactly what we want.

I like some of the links, such as people dancing on the streets and the use of the train, it's clever and also fits perfectly rather than the video footage being separate and jumbled up. I like the displays of showing September in New York. I think that is clever, and I reckon the US likes it. I wonder if that really went on, or was it just editing that changed them?

I have to admit, I don't have a lot to say about this music video, which suggests there isn't a lot going on in the music video. I like the song very much, and it grows on you every time you hear it and it's not long until it gets stuck in your head, and there's a party in your head. The music video links well, and it's a good music video for the song. I have dropped a star because I feel that there could have been more going on, and since I don't have a lot to comment on.

Ed Sheeran - The A Team

January 02, 2012 Critic Jonni 0 Comments

Ed Sheeran is an uprising new artist, who has already won lots of awards and it looks like he'll win a few more. He started releasing in 2011, this being his first single, and all of his singles have made the top 5 in the UK chart so far, he also has a debut number one album. He will definitely be around for quite some time

This song was written by Ed Sheeran himself, which suggests he has a lot of meaning to the words he sings. This is what I admire in an artist, because the whole song has a strong emotional feeling to the artist. And that is what makes it special. The song is about needing money to get by, and some people will do anything to get that money, but the anything bit is neither pleasant or exciting, and the person clearly doesn't like it.

The music video is PERFECT. It directly links in with the song and makes it clear what Ed Sheeran wants to get across. This song is his highest chart position to date, at number 3, and I reckon the music video has a lot to do with it. However there are a few things I don't like about it, and that is what I'm going to explore.

First off, my little bug bear, is that it is in black and white. I know this is an effect used to display more emotion or to make it look old, but it always gets on my nerves, because we have colour TV, and so you should be able to make a video emotional in colour. This also suggests that in colour it wasn't that emotional, and so they decided upon the black and white effect.

Some bits are also a little vivid, some children who may watch the music channels in the daytime, might wonder exactly what is going on. The person in the video, is portrayed by Stella MacDonald, and she shows off her acting skills in this music video, could she also be someone we see somewhere in the future?

I like the fact that Ed Sheeran appears and buys a "Big Issue" off her, but clearly it isn't enough, and she has to sell herself. As far as I'm aware of, no complaints appeared about this video, but you would have expected it, because she commits suicide at the end. There are videos out there (such as Britney Spears' "Criminal") that has been complained about for far less than what's in this video.

Overall I do like the song, it's soulful and meaningful, it's accompanying music video fits perfectly and although I am not happy about some of the things shown, it directly links with the song. It is controversial and that is usually a good thing in a music video. There are bits I don't like, so I've dropped a star, but that is all, and I hope I come to review more of Ed Sheeran's music videos in the future.

New Release: Taio Cruz - Troublemaker

January 02, 2012 Critic Jonni 0 Comments

Taio Cruz... What to say about him. Personally I'm never entire sure whether I should decide if I like him or not. He's songs are extremely catchy, and although I may not enjoy the lyrics that are contained within these catchy songs, somehow I'm drawn to the song, and end up singing along without even realising. I have been searching today for a new release (or should I say yesterday?) and this is the only video I have found that is released this week, however there probably is others. I had no idea what this song was until I watched the video on YouTube, and I felt that maybe it was a cover version, with the lyrics changed, but then the chorus kicked in and I realised I had previously heard it on the radio, and so it makes sense why it sounds so familiar.

Taio Cruz has had 2 number ones so far, and has collaborated with a load of different singers. I have only bought one song called "Dirty Picture", but only because Ke$ha collaborated with him on it. This song was written by Taio Cruz and Swedish House Mafia (who consists of Steve Angello, Rami Yacoub and Carl Falk). This may explain why I love the backing track on this song, since I'm quite fond of a lot of Swedish House Mafia's songs. This would have been a really good collaboration, so why does it only have Taio Cruz's name to it? If he was searching for another chart topper, he could have done a collaboration, otherwise this isn't going to work on it's own. I very much doubt it will manage toget ont the UK top 40, although it's really catchy and does have potential.

The video is definitely a typical Taio Cruz video, and probably will not help it chart high. The other videos in comparison were more structured and had lots more narrative, even if they don't necessarily link in with the songs meaning. In this case the song is about having a bit of fun, dancing, and the obvious. To be honest, I am glad the video isn't storyline scripted, because complaints could be alerted here, there and everywhere because of possible vivid scenes, but a narrative would have been nice, it could have been suggested rather than shown, at least.

I don't really think there is a lot to say about this video. I like some bits, such as the many different girls, although what they are wearing are more Lady GaGa style than anything else. The enclosed wall is a little cramped, if I'm being honest, and how they are going to do a ménage à trois in there beats me (sorry using Katy Perry's "Last Friday Night (T.G.I.F.)" word there), supposing that is their intent. Other than that, the rest of the video is on the boring side with not a lot going on.

Using my Facebook page, I decided to try and get others people's opinions. Only DJD has replied, stating what everyone else is thinking about this video. It's clear that this video probably will not help the single release, but we shall wait and see. Personally, I find the song extremely catchy, but the video is not as good as Taio Cruz's others, and I probably will skip over this when I'm watching the music videos.
