New Release: The Mend - Where Were You

March 25, 2013 Critic Jonni 0 Comments

I would be reviewing Cascada's "Glorious" as that is this week's New Release, however it is a Eurovision 2013 song, and since I shall be doing a Eurovision 2013 Special, I have to wait until then. So instead, I chose The Mend, who are fairly known.

The Mend are a four-piece band who first came to my attention on Britain's Got Talent. For some unknown reason, before coming to type up this review, I thought they were young, about 15/16, but when they auditioned the age range was 21-22, so that does explain the song choice and the old style as well. The band members include Kris Evans, Dean Kelly, Craig Worsley and Jay Kontzie. They remind me a lot of The Overtones although there has been quite a few other bands who have tried something like this and been unable to do as well. I wish The Mend the best of luck, but I don't think they are grabbing their target audience.

This music video relates to the song, in the style and the choreography, however it fails to entertain, to grip and hold on to their audience.

They are four guys in their 20s, they should be influencing the same age group, however they are singing the sort of song that wasn't even popular 20 years ago. If you're going to do this then at least make sure you can bring this style back just like The Overtones are doing. Or spice it up and create something totally new like The Baseballs. If you're going to do it, swap it, change it, never copy.

The old style, the old microphones, the brown and white colouring, the braces, the singing, the dancing... It's a complete old video, it's like I've been transported back in time. The one thing that proves it's recent is the old people dancing, these dancers are 20 years older than the singers, it's like watching your parents dancing.

To make this better is to make something like Daniela Brooker's "Heartbreaker", make something old, new... They could've used young dancers, and maybe half way through The Mend could've stepped down from the microphones and did some dancing themselves.

Overall a song that will only interest a few people but enough to chart this Sunday, and an accompanying music video, that fails to entertain and fails to interest me at all. If they wish to continue, I hope their next song and music video is a lot better, or these are going to fail before they've even started.

Times Red - Just No Good For Me

March 24, 2013 Critic Jonni 0 Comments

Times Red followed me the most recently, they were one of a few reasons why I started this special, because this is an amazing song and music video, how can I not set up a special to explore my twitter followers? They followed me on 17th March.

Times Red are a three-piece band consisting of Scott Ritchie, Staz Nair and Luke White. They first came to my attention when they were on The X Factor, how can you not remember their audition (for those of you who can't, you can find it below). They got all the way to the Judges Houses, where Louis Walsh didn't put them through. I supported them all the way and even voted to try and get them in during the wildcard vote, instead Christopher Maloney won that. Now they are going their own way, and just look at what Simon Cowell has missed out on, these are going to get big quick, and be on your guard, they will be running up the chart pretty soon.

This music video is simple, and could be considered low budget compared to other music videos, BUT it is WOW. There's is such an energy when they perform, they can sing, harmonise, play instruments, dance, act, the list is endless, is there anything these guys can't do?

Two sides of this music video, this is getting quite popular recently. A performance side, which is full of energetic vibes, that makes me looking on the internet for gig tickets, unfortunately no tour dates yet as they are recording their album, but this is one band I do not want to miss.

The narrative side is interesting, we have this woman who is obviously who the band is singing about, I like the role she plays and then she gets annoyed as he thinks she's no good for him. And the apple idea is flawlessly great.

The little choreography given works well, it shows they are a new band and don't want to push the boat out just yet. But I reckon if they get a choreographer in they'll be able to dance and surprise us even more. On the other hand, the dancing is raw, and they're all in sync too.

Overall a song that is just amazing, I cannot stop listening to it. They remind me of a cross between Maroon 5 and Theory Of A Deadman, I cannot wait for their next single and music video, and I just know I'm going to be excited when their album comes out. The accompanying music video works perfectly with the song, it relates, it makes me want to see them live, and I just have nothing bad to say about it... So I guess you know where this is going...

Mixtape - Dancing Star

March 23, 2013 Critic Jonni 0 Comments

Mixtape started following me on 12th March, they are an electric duo consisting of Pris Elias and Helen Negrão. They were previously a trio, in which they released one album in Portuguese called 'O Tormento do Tempo'. Now continuing on, they are releasing songs in English. Their most recent album, which featured 'Dancing Star' is called 'Find Your Own Way Home'. They took some time to grow on me, but they have managed to do just that. It wouldn't surprise me if they gain success in the next few years, with this sound and their theatrical videos and covers, this is one duo who we should keep an eye on.

The music video relates perfectly with the artwork that goes with their new album, it's theatrical and full of emphasis.

The light bulbs brings an eerie quality to it all, and Pris is singing about needing to let go, although she loves this person. And the setting suggests what has happened. The broken chair is definitely suggestive, along with Helen adjusting the ladder, and the tyre rolling.

A lot of suggestive content. The duo reminds me of The Ting Tings, because that duo has only one singer. I like the idea of having the other person in the music video as well, because they are equally important. Without that music, we would have nothing as the lyrics aren't that strong although Pris' voice is phenomenal.

Overall a catchy song that I can't help but sing-a-long to, and a music video that relates exactly the way we want it to. However the one thing that could be done to improve this is to make it more suggestive, they could've even added flashbacks to what did happen.

Two Weeks Running - Stay Forever

March 22, 2013 Critic Jonni 0 Comments

Two Weeks Running are a five-piece alternative indie rock group, the band members are Alex Goulding, Jon Wilkes, Kriss Restall, Phil Alstead and Sam Goulding. This is their first music video and have released an EP called 'Lions' which is available to download on Soundcloud. Their second EP is 'Beats For The Heart'. They are not my sort of band, and I wasn't into this song, however I can't knock them, they are growing bigger and bigger supporting well-known acts on their tours as well as featuring here there and everywhere. This is one band that won't go down without a fight, and that is exactly what makes a band... I'm interested where these guys will go to.

The music video is their first video, and so I have to hold off the harsh comments as first music videos usually aren't that great, but compared to ones I have seen this isn't so bad.

I like the split of a narrative and a performance piece. The performance piece is quite static, but that's explainable to due the crowding and the close quarters of the gig, making it difficult to spread the energetic field of playing.

The narrative side is less interesting, they are throwing rocks at empty alcohol bottles, personally I don't find that fun, unless I was a child... Before hand they drove to that place going past pubs and shops. I like how it shows the area off, so that people who know where they are could go there too.

Overall a song that has potential, but not my sort of thing, and a music video that slightly fits and slightly doesn't. The narrative and performance adds to the overall feel of the video, but it fails to keep me interested long enough.

Bauer - Connected

March 21, 2013 Critic Jonni 0 Comments

Bauer are a four-piece band who have just released their album 'Sleeping Giant'. They followed me on twitter on 21st February. The band consists of Greg Matthews, Neil Treppas, Lee Bradbury and Michael Reed. They aren't my type of music, however I was surprised by it and intrigued in what their album includes.

I had to pick between this song and "(Feels Like) Heaven". I thought this music video was slightly better than the other one. The song has a catchy quality to it, when I had finished listening to it, it was kind of stuck in my head, so much so I wanted to listen to it again. If they manage to do that to me, they can do it to a lot of other people too, gaining the audience they need to make themselves popular.

This music video uses a lot of lighting to create a lot of tension during this performance piece. It's quite technical great, but that is how far it goes.

The lighting doesn't help at all to give across what they are like on stage, suggesting that we may not want to see them, especially since I don't get very many vibes from them, however for all I know they could be amazing live, but this video fails to portray it.

There's a few extras, plays with lighting, and some computers set up that are in striking blue, that is so different to the lighting from before that it intrigues me, unfortunately it doesn't go anywhere, leaving me unsure of what is going on.

Overall, a song that actually gets quite catchy, and an accompanying music video that is insightful to watch, but fails to keep me entertained, and I lose interest half way through, because nothing happens, it's almost repeated footage, and that is never good.

The Dead Famous - Hide Your Halo

March 20, 2013 Critic Jonni 0 Comments

The Dead Famous followed me on 15th February, after I reviewed Elliot Minor's "I Believe". One of the band members used to be in Elliot Minor. The Dead Famous consists of James Matthews (Go:Audio fame), Dan Hetherton (Elliot Minor fame), Ollie Collins and Dave Baker. They have released two singles, "Superstar" and this one.

Before today I have never listened to their music, I was waiting until I reviewed them, so that their sound was new to me, and that is exactly what they are. I can't possibly name any band out there similar to these, they are creating a new line of rock, that is so unique that it will not take too much time before they're popular. Could The Dead Famous bring back rock?

"Hide Your Halo" has been popular, and to be honest I don't blame it, as it's extremely catchy and very different to rock songs out now. So many bands are trying new things, look at Paramore's "Now". But this band is going to hit the charts soon, mark my words.

The music video is split between the main piece (the performance piece) and the backing piece (the narrative)... This is usually what gets top ratings from me.

The performance piece is always the main piece in most rock music videos, as they wish to portray what they are like are on stage, and wow, there's fire, there's energy, an amazing singer: James Matthews and amazing instrument work from Dan, Ollie and Dave. How can you not want to see these live after watching this?

The narrative is top notch too, and although I generally hate black and white media, this pulls it off as it isn't the centre piece, but in doing so, they have brought the narrative into focus. The angel theme is one that isn't taken on by many, one angel video that stands out is Alanis Morissette's "Guardian". This one has a similar theme, but the angel saves the day.

Overall, a song that I shall be buying soon as it blew me away, and a perfect accompanying music video that I can't stop watching and listening to. How can I not give this a top rating, this is fill of the very essence of a great video, and I cannot wait to see what is next for these guys. Especially since previously I wanted Elliot Minor to get back together, now I hope they don't because it means putting The Dead Famous on hold, and I DO NOT WANT THAT TO HAPPEN. Keep going guys, I am now an official fan.

Sylosis - Empyreal

March 19, 2013 Critic Jonni 0 Comments

Sylosis are a British metal band who followed me quite early on, making them the second artist to be a part of my Twitter Followers Special. I think they're the only artist who I'll be reviewing this week who has a 'Verified Account' twitter tick. They have released three albums, one of which 'Edge Of The Earth' charted at number 139 on the UK chart. They are a four piece band consisting of Josh Middleton, Alex Bailey, Carl Parnell and Rob Callard. This song is on the 'Edge Of The Earth' album, and this video is the only video made for the album.

The video reflects the album more than anything else, the idea of forming a more real version of the album cover, is very unique, and manages to engage the audience into watching it, to see where it will go on to.

The video is both narrative and performance based, but there is more scenes of the performance side. This is typical of most metal music videos I have watched. As they want to show what they will be like lived to try and sell tickets to their gigs.

This performance piece is powerful, you know that you'd have a good time at one of their tours, although it's not my sort of music, I can see why people would go and see them live.

The narrative side of things features a guy who looks like a caveman, walking through tunnel caves. He has a candle ruling out the whole caveman thing since candles wasn't around back then. He finds images on the wall and also becomes possessed in the last half of the video.

It's different, it's surprising and actually really works. It may not be my sort of music but I can appreciate it for what it is. The video is dark and perfect for this music.

Aalvin - Hope For Better

March 18, 2013 Critic Jonni 0 Comments

Aalvin is marked as my 30th follower on Twitter (at the moment) and so becomes the first of my Twitter Followers Special. He is my longest artist follower who has a music video, just behind DixonBeats. Although I have already reviewed DixonBeats' music video "Afraid" that is a collaboration with Dante. Not much is known about Aalvin, but I can tell you this. He is a singer/songwriter, and claims to be from London/New York. His voice is full of soul, creating goosebumps up my arms within seconds. With the right people behind this person we're going to see him in the limelight, but with the wrong people behind him, he'll just be another artist who gave it a go. I'm not quite sure music is ready to give up this soulful voice. "Hope For Better" is taken from his EP 'Never Forger' which is only available on SoundCloud so far.

This music video is simple but emotional, fitting perfectly with everything you would've expected. There is a narrative and a performance side.

The narrative features a couple, who start off on the stairwell reading 'The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo' by Stieg Larsson, which I have read myself, and personally I don't think it's one of those books you'd read together, I would naturally go for a Nicholas Sparks book. The relationship takes a spin for the worse where they start to ignore one another, I love her t-shirt saying 'Don't you want me?', a clever way to use speech without interfering with the song. The ending leaves him going on the Underground while she stays here, but they're smiling so there is hope.

The performance side is also simple, although at the start, the people and the buses and other traffic are put in reverse motion as Aalvin is moving forwards. It suggests he is reflecting on something that happened in the past. Various other scenes are included such as him singing down a payphone, which means he's trying to get a hold of someone, or is possibly asking and hoping for better the next time they meet.

Overall a song that is enriching and pulls at my heart strings at times, that is how powerful his voice is. The music video links perfectly, and has everything I possibly need to give it a high rating. And although I'm desperately trying to find something wrong with this video, I fail in finding it, and so my rating is totally justified and this video clearly deserves it.

New Release: The Saturdays Featuring Sean Paul - What About Us

March 18, 2013 Critic Jonni 0 Comments

The Saturdays are a British girl group who are ready to tackle America and have been attempting to do so for a while. They are extremely well-known in the UK, managing to rack up a total of 11 top ten hits, but have yet to get a number one, they have been so close getting number two with songs: "Just Can't Get Enough" and "Forever Is Over". The five-piece consists of Una Healy, Vanessa White, Mollie King, Frankie Sandford and Rochelle Humes (née Wiseman). All of which had careers before The Saturdays, although the latter two had the biggest success, since they were in S Club Juniors/S Club 8.

The featured artist is Sean Paul, real name Sean Paul Henriques, he is a big hit across the world, but still haven't got his solo number one in the UK yet, but have managed to be on a featured number one which was Blu Cantrell's "Breathe", guess this will be his second featured number one of his... Will he ever claim his own number one?

"What About Us" was written by Camille Purcell, Ollie Jacobs and Philip Jacobs. I'm surprised that none of them have ever been featured on my blog, and it's rare for unknown songwriter to write a popular song, this may just push them into success. Again, I'm unhappy that The Saturdays didn't get involved with the song writing, as I think it would make the song much more personal, however they are amazing singers, and have managed to make this song have enough emotion, like they have managed to do so with all their singles, astounding me that none of them have been co-written by the girls. It's catchy and similar but different to The Saturdays other songs, this is definitely going to chart right at the top.

This music video has an American theme to it, to interest their American audiences, in the hope to rise up their chart. The band has been doing various gigs in the US to try and promote their song, along with their TV series called 'Chasing The Saturdays' which is shown on both sides of the Atlantic.

There are various scenes in the video, there's an American high street, a pool, a billiards club and a baseball stadium. The latter is joined by Sean Paul on the bleachers, and as he raps the girls perform dance choreography, which they do perfectly. I like how at the end they all collapse as if they're exhausted.

Overall a great song that should give the girls their first ever UK number one. And an accompanying music video that fits well for them, they're clearly enjoying what America brings. The only problem I have that it is neither a performance piece or a narrative piece, and purely showing off who the girls are and what they stand for and it's pretty much an introduction video.

Ashlee Simpson - Outta My Head (Ay Ya Ya)

March 17, 2013 Critic Jonni 0 Comments

Ashlee Simpson becomes my Sunday Revisit, purely because I've been stuck for choice, and I distinctly remember watching this music video on the music channels. She has a famous sister Jessica Simpson, who is also a singer/actress. Ashlee Simpson is finally gearing up to releasing a fourth album, but is she past her peak of her career, or is it time to get back on track and become a hit once again?

"Outta My Head (Ay Ya Ya)" was written by Ashlee Simpson, King Logan, Jerome Harmon, Santi White and Kenna. It marks Ashlee Simpson's lowest charting position in the UK, to date, managing to get to number 24. "Pieces Of Me" got to number four, "La La" number 11, and the recently reviewed "Boyfriend" got to number 12. The song is about having all these voices in your head, from the people who think they should advise you on what you need to do, and sometimes it's a bit too much. Always do what you want, regardless of what everyone else thinks, that's my advice.

This music video is over the top of wackiness. There's so much going on, so much that you find it hard to keep up with, that it explains the song and connects with it perfectly.

There is a lot of references included, so much so that it reminds me of Britney Spears' "I Wanna Go". There's a reference to Salvador Dalí's 'The Persistence Of Memory' with the melting clock, she is also seen with dark hair on top of a 'Rubik's Cube'. She also gets tied up by tiny people, which is a reference to 'Gulliver's Travels'. And once again the constant attack of the paparazzi, which has been featured in so many videos that I'm tired of mentioning it. One person even has a camera as a head. One of the co-writer's Kenna features as a reporter in the video.

This is clearly identifiable as an Ashlee Simpson video, even if she wasn't in the video, it's noticeable as her due to the quirkiness of it all. That still reminds me of the other videos I have reviewed "Boyfriend" and "L.O.V.E." that I question whether we'll find something different from this artist, or will she stick to this niche that is clearly her... Guess we'll find out when she starts releasing singles and videos for her new album.

Overall, a catchy song that has a messed-up quality to it that you can't help but admire, it feels like so many people talking to you at once, and that is exactly what the song is about. The video follows the song perfectly, going over the top and adding the perfect messed-up side with mental institutes and paparazzi and a robotic Ashlee Simpson.

Ashlee Simpson - Boyfriend

March 16, 2013 Critic Jonni 0 Comments

Ashlee Simpson is currently getting ready for a come back in music. She is both a singer and an actress, along with her well-known sister Jessica Simpson. Her albums have failed to gain much chart success in the UK, her first album managed to get to number 31, and her subsequent albums didn't even make the top 40. It's a total different story for the singles, 4 of which has charted high, "Pieces of Me" got to number 4, "La La" number 11, this song got to number 12 and her most recent chart position is number 24 with "Outta My Head (Ay Ya Ya)". My favourite single "L.O.V.E." did not get an official release in the UK.

"Boyfriend" was written by Kara DioGuardi, John Shanks and Ashlee Simpson. The song is apparently "not about one person in particular". But the song is about a girl who insists you've stolen her boyfriend, she's claiming she didn't. Various rumours have popped up about who this song might be about, guess we'll never know. Since "L.O.V.E." didn't get an official release in the UK, this is henceforth the only single released from the album 'I Am Me'.

This music video is mainly performance piece, but so full of vibes that you can't help but enjoy it for what it is, she has this stage presence that is gripping to watch. Her performance is extremely watchable, she's moving about, rocking out, striking sexy dance moves. It's fun to watch. And given the chance, I definitely would see her live.

I like the use of the band behind her, it shows she isn't afraid of showing who the band is that helps her make music, therefore giving her a lot more respect in my eyes.

There is a slight narrative to this, where she is running from the cops at the start, this kind of makes me think someone has called the police on her because she "stole" a boyfriend, making something become much more serious than what it is. Also a bunch of people start running towards something, although it is never clear who or what they are running to, my guess is that it's Ashlee Simpson's gig they are running to. It kind of reminds me of Lostprophets' music video to "Shinobi Vs. Dragon Ninja".

Overall, a great catchy song that should've charted higher than number 12. The music video fits the song pretty well, they could've added more to the narrative side, as well as making it clear what or who all the people are running to. At the end Ashlee Simpson jumps into what is possibly her boyfriend she references to in her song. He is played by Efren Ramirez.

Basshunter - Walk On Water

March 15, 2013 Critic Jonni 0 Comments

Basshunter popped up on my iTunes reminding me of how far behind I am on his music videos, and I really need to start to catch up, especially since he has an album around the corner, apparently.

Basshunter, real name Jonas Altberg, is a Swedish DJ and singer, who had a few hits in his career, making him the most successful artist on the Hard2Beat/Dance Nation Records. The label has currently dropped all of their artists, and as far as I can tell it's all down to the music channel. Basshunter is now currently signed to All Around The World Records, but it seems to me he has left his fans in his old record company, and I reckon people are unaware of his new stuff. He needs to pull something out the bag quickly.

"Walk On Water" was the final single cut from his debut album in the UK 'Now You're Gone - The Album'. It was one of my favourite songs from the album along side 'Camilla'. It is known as professional boxer Nathan Cleverly's entrance song.

The music video disappointed me the first time I saw it. Basshunter is the guy who introduced us to the movie music video, his music videos follow one after the other, creating this complete storyline, and this is the song that breaks it, or is it?

RECAP: "Now You're Gone" Aylar Lie and Lucas Thorheim break up by text at the start. They go out clubbing with friends in separate groups, and end up in the same club. Aylar invites Lucas over, they get back together. "All I Ever Wanted" they go to Spain. They have fun with water guns and dressing up. While clubbing, Lucas talks to a "mate's cousin", Aylar doesn't believe him. "Angel In The Night" starts with the break up of Aylar and Lucas (again via text). A minute later she meets Basshunter. He impresses her by winning a street race, and singing at the end. "I Miss You / Jingle Bells" they go on holiday to Norway for Christmas, Basshunter says he can't go, but it's a joke and he really is there. They invite friends, open presents and have a dip in the hot tub. A house party happens, and Basshunter has to fend off a guy who makes advances towards Aylar.

Does this video fit in? Well I've kind of found a connection. Basshunter sings in "Angel In The Night" so maybe he is actually playing himself, and so maybe he is a singer, and this video is part of his tour. For all we know, Aylar could have been backstage. It fits in the story, but only slightly, but it's there. His job as a singer, in the story also explains why he might not have been able to go to Norway in "I Miss You / Jingle Bells".

This video doesn't purposely try to fit in the story. It shows his presence on stage, and we get to see what it would be like to go to one of his gigs... But the whole point of this thing is to make me want to go, and to be honest I wouldn't want to.

If he is performing like that on stage with dancers who aren't dancing all that much and he is purely singing while jumping up and down... Well I feel no vibes at all from him, and I'd rather not see it.

I imagined his tours would be like going to a club, where he is the DJ. That has always been my idea of what his tours would be like. However according to this I may be completely wrong.

Overall, an amazing song, that could have brought a lot to the whole story for the music video, maybe Aylar Lie wasn't available at that time? The video is a representation of what seeing him live would be like, however I have my fingers crossed it is not at all like that. This is definitely full of disappointments, and the only thing I really like about this is the fact that he gets a camera out and we manage to see his fans, through editing.

High School Musical Cast - I Don't Dance

March 14, 2013 Critic Jonni 0 Comments

When I get a song stuck in my head it's inevitable that it appears on here, and right now is another example of that.

High School Musical spawned 3 films and a spin off called 'Sharpay's Fabulous Adventure'. They became so popular they managed to release the third movie at cinemas, whereas the first two and the spin-off were television movies. The films also gave us a few very well-known stars, the likes including Zac Efron, Vanessa Hudgens, Ashley Tisdale, Lucas Grabeel, Corbin Bleu and Monique Coleman. Will there be another film? I doubt it, however I wouldn't be surprised to find a reunion movie popping up in a few years maybe? Guess we'll have to wait and see.

"I Don't Dance" was written by Matthew Gerrard, Robbie Nevil and Giancarlo Binando. The song is sung by Lucas Grabeel and Corbin Bleu. It is one of my favourites from the second movie, and I think the whole production behind it was engaging and surprising. A lot clearly went into this.

The video is full of the typical musical dancing and acting. But this manages to make me laugh for a number of reasons, Mainly because you're not actually watching the film, and so in theory you are watching it out of context, and so some parts is much more great to watch. I especially like how Corbin Bleu is singing 'I don't dance' while dancing... Which shows that even the unlikely person can dance if they set their mind to it.

I like how Lucas' character 'Ryan Evans' tries to get Corbin Bleu's character 'Chad Danforth' dancing, proving that if Ryan can do this then Chad can do that.

I like the inclusion of sport, in this case it was baseball. I don't believe there is a music video that features baseball (as far as I'm aware of). The choreography is in total sync, as you would expect from these guys, and the use of the baseball gloves and bats gives you more to look at and not one falls out of place; but if they did, it would've been very obvious.

Overall a very catchy song and definitely one of my favourite scenes from the second movie. The music video (or scene from the movie) is well made, and relates to the song perfectly. The choreography is exceptional, and I have no choice but to give this video the rating it deserves.

Mandia Nantsios - Never Again

March 13, 2013 Critic Jonni 0 Comments

Mandia Nantsios is my "Artist of the Month" for March (her profile will be up later), so it's only right I review her first music video and single with it. She is just 16 years old, and with a very meaningful voice, every word is sung with conviction and you know she means it all. Her second single was "One Last Time", she got five stars from me for that one, will this follow? The world better watch out, because this Canadian superstar is on the verge of stepping into the spotlight.

"Never Again" was written by Mandia Nantsios. It's engaging, raw and emotional, all the aspects of a perfect song.

This music video follows the song in every way. There's both a performance and a narrative. The narrative side is crisp and follows through from the song.

It's the usual boyfriend cheats on girlfriend, we've seen this in a few videos in the past, but this one stands out because we get to see what the past was like for them, and then return to the story in the present, with her dropping the necklace he bought her.

The performance side takes dominance during the centre of the video, she is seen in various locations, some of which, such as the boat, shows what he is missing out on. Other settings add to the raw emotion, leaving you surprised at how strong of a performer Mandia Nantsios is.

The one problem I do have is the dancers in the background, they kind of feel out of place, almost like they're trying to be more important than Mandia, however the editing has made Mandia Nantsios more in the picture, preventing her from being empowered. After a second watch I can almost forget that the dancers are there. On the other hand, I feel that they shouldn't have been included, Mandia's such a good performer she doesn't need them.

Overall a song that is perfect in every way and just proves that Mandia Nantsios is an up and coming star. The music video reflects the song the way we want it to, adding more emotion to the song, which seems impossible. Although I don't like the dancers, I'm prepared to let it slide, since they're easily ignorable.

Miley Cyrus - Fly On The Wall

March 12, 2013 Critic Jonni 0 Comments

Miley Cyrus, real name Destiny Cyrus, has appeared on my blog quite a few times. This time my iTunes decided to get it stuck in my head, and it sure managed to do that. This song is probably one of my favourite songs from Miley Cyrus, and I'm interested in what she has in store for us in the future, clearly it's going to be big, but can she get higher up the UK Chart?

"Fly On The Wall" was written by Miley Cyrus, Antonina Armato, Tim James and Devrim Karaoglu. Many different interpretations of the song has been made, from sympathy to the boyfriend, to the boyfriend wanting to know everything. Miley Cyrus soon enough cleared it all up, saying it was about the paparazzi... And the music video empathises that perfectly.

This music video shocked me over and over again, from the start to near to the end, and then the completely surprising ending. This video really reflects what it is like to be followed by the paparazzi. Britney Spears has been portraying her concerns for ages now in the videos for "Everytime", "Piece Of Me", "If U Seek Amy", "Hold It Against Me" and "I Wanna Go", I'm sure there's probably more. Other music videos include: Stone Sour's "Through Glass", Kelly Clarkson's "Mr. Know It All" and Cher Lloyd's "Swagger Jagger".

And although this song came out it hasn't stopped anything, and it's only getting worse, only a few months ago, Miley Cyrus posted a video of her walking her dogs while one of the paparazzi parked in a handicapped place and ran in front of her taking pictures (video can be found on the right).

Once again we have a narrative and a performance piece. First off we think her boyfriend is going to turn into a werewolf with the full moon being out and stuff. Instead he turns into one of the paparazzi. She then ends up in the car park and is being chased everywhere she goes.

The best bit has to be when the paparazzi start to dance, I can't help but laugh as I'll always remember the first time I saw this and I really wasn't expecting it, and it still manages to draw me into that surprise every time. And then we get the more shocking ending, where her boyfriend sells her story about the paparazzi. That's just wrong on so many levels.

There's a bit of a performance side in the car park, which she lets lose and has a little bit of fun. I reckon she really enjoyed filming this music video, and in doing so, it's just as fun to watch.

Overall a great song that only managed to get to number 16 on the UK chart, it clearly deserves a higher position. The music video is pure brilliance, and definitely one of my favourites. It has a close theme to Michael Jackson's "Thriller". So you can all guess what my rating is going to be...

Ke$ha - C'Mon

March 11, 2013 Critic Jonni 0 Comments

Ke$ha, real name Kesha Sebert, annoyed the hell out of me last week, when I was expecting her to release this single in the UK, instead I had to struggle to find a different new release, and I ended up with Daniela Brooker's "Heartbreaker". Then a couple of days ago, I notice the remixes single released claiming to be released at the start of March, which it wasn't. Ke$ha, has recently been disappearing slowly, but all of her UK 'Animals', aren't going to let her become unknown to us. I am hoping she returns with a big song soon, her new album is full of potential hits, so pull a good one out the bag Ke$ha, especially the one that features Iggy Pop called "Dirty Love", it's my favourite track from 'Warrior'.

"C'mon" was written by Kesha, Dr. Luke, Bonnie McKee, Max Martin, Melin Shikder, Cirkut and Benny Blanco. A lot of well-known song writers, and although the song is very catchy it didn't chart as well as it should've done, especially in the UK since there was a mix-up with the release date. Some people have commented saying this isn't wacky enough for Ke$ha, and we can kind of see what those people mean, especially if you compared the song to "TiK ToK" or "Blah Blah Blah". But she definitely makes up for it in the video.

The video looks normal at first, showing her being late for her shift at a diner, only her boss is sleazy. His name is Ri¢hard (similar to Ke$ha because he has a cent sign in his name). She soon quits her job, and that is when her 'Animals' turn up and makes everything out of this world.

It has nothing to do with the song, and that is what I find is really missing. However there's a lot of fun going on, especially in the back of the van, it's much bigger inside than it is on the outside, clearly.

I like how they return to the diner and get their revenge. I think the people dressed up are amazing, especially since on of them does a back flip! But I wanted meaning, I wanted a connection with the song.

Overall a song that should've charted well everywhere. And an accompanying music video that needs some engagement, however manages to hook to the song with the use of her singing 'I don't wanna go to sleep, I wanna stay up all night' so hence the partying, and just having fun. But needs more of a connection.

New Release: K Koke Featuring Rita Ora - Lay Down Your Weapons

March 11, 2013 Critic Jonni 0 Comments

K Koke, real name Kevin Georgiou, has only just started his career in music. He is currently signed to Roc Nation, and is planning on releasing an album soon. So far he has released various mixtapes, along with his first single "Turn Back" featuring Maverick Sabre. This is definitely an up and coming rap star, and will definitely become embedded into British history in the near future. I cannot wait to see where his career will take him, and what amazing new, powerful songs will climb up our chart, from this guy.

The featured artist is the amazing Rita Ora. Who's had one of the quickest pushes into fame, we've seen in a long time, reminding me of Britney Spears when she first came on the scene. Rita Ora has three consecutive number one UK singles to her name, along with a number one album. Her recent singles have not been as much of a success, but I'm sure that will change with the reported new album to be released this year. She will become unstoppable.

The music video does well to represent the song. As the song is about ending up in prison after doing something that is completely not worth it. K Koke was arrested in 2011 for an attempted murder of unidentified 27-year-old football player. On 3rd November he was acquitted of all charges after seven months on remand. He has put that behind him, and even incorporated much more meaning to his rapping. You know just by hearing his words, that prison wasn't great at all, and clearly he's hoping that he will stop this from happening to others. And I can't help but feel proud that there are artists out there trying to make a difference.

There is a narrative and a performance side. The narrative plays on the prison and what it is like inside. It does look pretty boring to be honest, but what they really play on is the guilt of the person going in. Again another actor we don't know.

The narrative side shows exactly how Rita Ora performs, and as usual she goes all out, with her amazing energy, it flows perfectly to K Koke, who hasn't got many vibes, but there's enough there to make him mysterious, and it makes you want to go and see him live just to see if he can live up to his video, and to find out what more he has to give.

Overall a very personal song, that holds so much feeling and depth of emotion that you can't help but be drawn into the song entirely. The music video does the exact same thing, only this time showing the consequences of your actions. And I can't help but join Rita Ora with her lyrics 'lay down your weapons, weapons for me'.

Nickelback - How You Remind Me

March 10, 2013 Critic Jonni 0 Comments

Nickelback became my Sunday Revisit, purely because I was shocked to find out I have not reviewed this music video, after quoting it in both "Lullaby" and "Gotta Be Somebody". They are a four-piece rock band consisting of Chad Kroeger, Ryan Peake, Mike Kroeger and Daniel Adair.

"How You Remind Me" was written by Nickelback, and has recently been covered by Chad Kroeger's fiancé Avril Lavigne for the film 'One Piece Film: Z', so far it has only had a Japan release, but I have my fingers crossed it gets released worldwide with her new album. The original is probably Nickelback's most well-known song alongside "Rockstar". These two songs always come to mind first when this band is mentioned. This song is the second highest charting single from Nickelback, following "Rockstar".

This music video is powerful and meaningful, both narrative and performance and nothing wrong with it at all. So I think you can all guess what my rating will be.

The lead actress is Annie Henley, and she does a great performance of being Chad Kroeger's ex. She's almost a ghost, disappearing every time Chad sees her. And it's totally understandable if you thought she was haunting him wherever he went. This whole idea brings up a totally new angle to this story that I have never thought of before. However, they link it back to the song at the end, with her actually being amongst the crowd and looking quite sultry. You know that she hurt him, and although he's not ready to quite let go, he doesn't want her back.

The performance side has all the vibes we've seen from other music videos; clearly, this is a band who knows how to perform, and if you're ever lucky enough to see them live, then please invite me too! Their performances in their videos are full of emotion and energy. Making a lot of people want to see them live, including me.

Overall a great song that you can't help but enjoy, and an accompanying music video that no one can fault. For me, it has everything I want and more and I can't help but sit back and watch how great this is. So you can all guess what my rating will be, and how can I rate it any less?

The Faders - No Sleep Tonight

March 09, 2013 Critic Jonni 0 Comments

The Faders, were an all female British pop/rock band. They came in to prominence in 2004 and labelled the all female version of Busted, but they weren't the only ones following in their footsteps, there was McFly (obviously), and The Noise Next Door (who sung "Lock Up Your Daughter" and "Calendar Girls" as well as the theme tune to 'Ministry of Mayhem'). The girls in the band were Molly Lorenne (Molly McQueen/Molly Ure), Toy Valentine and Cherisse Osei. They released 2 singles, this single "No Sleep Tonight" got to number 13, while the second single "Jump" got to number 21 on the UK Chart. And an album. But where are they now? Molly McQueen has been attempting a solo career for some time now and Cherisse Osei is a drummer for many artists. As for Toy Valentine... I can't find her anywhere. This band could do well if they returned.

This music video is a typical revenge on a guy, and I have to admit, these are getting boring now, we've had Rudenko's "Everybody", From Above's "Not The Same Girl", Little Mix's "DNA" and Danny & Freja's atrocious "If Only You", and you could kind of include New Found Glory's "Kiss Me". This is so constant, are we ever going to get away from it all?

On top of that, this video brings a school setting again, so a combination of constants that I'm not even going to start listing. But that aside what have we got?

Well a narrative, and a performance piece. A song that I quickly get confused with Enter Shikari's "No Sleep Tonight" which are totally different, but both songs are equally catchy that you can't help having one or the other stuck in your head when you hear the title. And a revenge plot that you can't help but laugh at, the ending of which is surprising and is definitely one way of capture.

Overall a great song, that should've pushed them more into the limelight rather than letting them disappear. The song has been used in a number of campaigns and films and tv series. 'She's The Man' is the one that comes to mind in my head. The accompanying music video that could be considered common, but back then we hadn't seen much of this just yet, so I'm giving it the benefit of the doubt, and giving it the rating it deserves. I think this band should return, the performance side of things were complete with amazing rocking vibes that could put bands out now to shame. This band together again could be just what the music industry needs.

Nickelback - Gotta Be Somebody

March 08, 2013 Critic Jonni 0 Comments

Nickelback, such a big name and one that was on everybody's lips, however their popularity has dropped with their most recent singles just claiming the UK top 200 such as "Lullaby", or even not charting at all. Is this band going to disappear forever? Or Will they kick back with an amazing new single? Guess we'll have to wait and see. They are a four-piece rock band consisting of Chad Kroeger, Ryan Peake, Mike Kroeger and Daniel Adair.

"Gotta Be Somebody" was written by the whole band, the writing credits announces the writers as Chad Kroeger, Ryan Peake, Mike Kroeger and Daniel Adair. I have to admit the song is definitely one of my favourites by this band, as it has a big emotional tie behind it that links perfectly with my outlook on life. Many artists have covered and released this song including Bucky Covington's "Gotta Be Somebody" and Shayne Ward's "Gotta Be Somebody".

The music video plays on the song lyrics 'there's gotta be somebody for me out there', referencing the entire universe, and there is definitely somebody for everyone. At this current moment, lead singer Chad Kroeger is engaged to Avril Lavigne, an unlikely match, but one that could definitely work.

The video is totally different, it's quite dark, but it's also mainly a performance piece, and there is a certain vibe coming from them, but I don't know whether that's just the singing or the performance.

I like how we zone in to Earth and start off in Italy; Rome to be more exact at the Colosseum. When an Earthquake hits, we then move to Brooklyn Bridge in New York City, America. And the bridge is swinging as they perform, with a crack line through the middle. We then move on to a desert in the Southwestern United States.

Overall, a great song that should've charted higher in the UK chart than number seven, however it makes this song their fourth highest charting single after "Rockstar" at number two, "How You Remind Me" at number four and "Someday" at number six. The music video is out of this world, pun intended. But it's missing a narrative which would have made this absolutely perfect. Maybe the narrative side of this performance could have played a bit more. It's good but not great.

V - Blood, Sweat And Tears

March 07, 2013 Critic Jonni 0 Comments

V, a band who came to prominence the same time McFly did. It's obvious who came out on top, but what have we missed out on? The band consisted of five members, hence the name which comes from the Roman numeral meaning five. The members were Aaron Buckingham, Antony Thomas Brant, Mark Harle, Kevin McDaid and Leon Pisani. With 2 hit singles, this one getting number 6 and "Hip To Hip" getting number 5, their third single dipped to number 12. Their album can be seen as the cause of their crash out of the music industry. 'You Stood Up' peaked at number 86, and that was the end of the band. "Blood, Sweat And Tears" was my favourite song from them, and even now it still gets stuck in my head.

This music video has not a lot to do with the song, there's not a lot of blood or tears going on, but maybe a bit of sweat, but not from hard work, and definitely from the glorious sunshine.

They are practically singing into the camera, so do we presume this girl they are singing to is the camera? I don't think so. This is just a group of lads having fun in Miami, Florida. But why is this seen differently to The Wanted's "Glad You Came"?

Well there isn't an innuendo to the song, this video fails to grab many people, apart from them stripping off, but even in doing so they don't seem united, still Aaron keeps his top on through-out, how can you be a unity if you're all not doing something similar?

Overall an extremely catchy song that I'm surprised hasn't been covered and smashed the charts recently. The music video is fun, fun, fun, and lacking unity. The band's demise is similar to VS, who did "Call U Sexy" amongst other songs. Both bands appeared and disappeared around the same time. Why do I end up liking all the artists who end up disappearing?

Miley Cyrus - Who Owns My Heart

March 06, 2013 Critic Jonni 0 Comments

Miley Cyrus, real name Destiny Cyrus, has been featured on this blog many of times. She has a big fan base, and has recently gone sexy to improve her image and to prove that she is not this innocent young girl we all thought she was. The change is very reminiscent of Britney Spears' change with "I'm A Slave For You" and Christina Aguilera's "Dirrty". Controversy sparked with this album, but she's set in the right direction, and she is not an innocent girl. She also cut her hair off within the last year. It is now short and blonde. I still haven't made up my mind if I like it, but who cares? As long as she likes it, everything is good. She is currently getting ready to release a new album this year (hopefully).

"Who Owns My Heart" was her second single from her most recent album 'Can't Be Tamed'. It was written by Miley Cyrus, Antonina Armato, Tim James and Devrim Karaoglu. The song is about club vibes and whether or not you actually like the person you are dancing with. It is the sort of song that clubs would've picked up, however it failed to chart in the UK, this could be for many reasons, but I would put it down to next to no promotion, whereas her other singles got quite a bit.

This music video is sexy, it's the only word that comes to mind, and you can't really blame me, because that is what it is. She's waking from a bed wearing not much, then gets ready to go out clubbing and ends up back in the bed.

It shows a new completely different side to her, but it does in fact show who she really is. She's 20 years old, and you really think she's one of these people who sit alone in their room talking to friends? Nope, she's out on the town and hitting it hard just like me, and all the other 20 year olds (yes, me and Miley Cyrus are the same age).

Overall a catchy club song that should've done well in the UK. The accompanying music video fits perfectly and is a true representation of who she is, why should we ask anything less? I don't see much of a narrative and so I knocked off one star, but apart from that how can I rate it less than it deserves?

The Offspring - Pretty Fly (For A White Guy)

March 05, 2013 Critic Jonni 0 Comments

The Offspring has been going for ages! But this is definitely their most well-known song, and I was surprised that way back in 1998, it topped the UK chart (amongst other countries). The band are a four-piece rock band. Back then the band consisted of Dexter Holland, Noodles, Greg K. and Ron Welty. The latter left in 2003, and was replaced by Atom Willard, who then subsequently left in 2007, and then that's when Pete Parada came in. The band had major success back in the late 90s and early 00s, managing to get two more singles in the UK's top 10 which were "Why Don't You Get A Job?" at number two and "Original Prankster" at number six, with various other singles easily jumping into the chart. This is no small feet for a rock band. So where are they now? Well devoted fans will know they're still around and releasing, one quick look on iTunes confirms their new singles are being released. But once again, like so many others, they have fallen from their height of fame. On the other hand, some have managed to crawl all the way back to the top, and it wouldn't surprise me if they manage to do just that.

"Pretty Fly (For A White Guy)" was written by Dexter Holland. The song takes the mick out of a "wannabe gangsta" who is obsessed with hip-hop not because he enjoys it or understands it, but because he thinks it makes him cool and fly. The female vocals were recorded by Nika Futterman.

The music video portrays the song perfectly, showing a guy immersed in hip-hop stuff but not at all a part of it. He thinks he's all that when he really isn't. I like the ending and how he scares his little sister.

The performance side of this video is quite opposing. In the narrative it's sunny and fun. Then we have this dark, imposing side that is so engaging and full of life too. Only not the same. It looks like a total conflict, but deep down it relates just as well. It is definitely a perfect representation of what they would be like live.

The storyline shocks me every time I see it. It's practically over the top, but we all know that there are people who are that naïve, and you may know one or two of them yourself.

Overall a song that is infinitely catchy and will be well known until the end of the Earth. The music video links oh so perfectly, and we have added bonus of a performance scene shot through out. How can I not sit back and enjoy this while I have the chance? Well it's usually because shock replaces my happiness, every single time. I have no choice, this music video clearly deserves this rating, I just wish I could rate it higher.

The Veronicas - Untouched

March 04, 2013 Critic Jonni 0 Comments

This song has been stuck in my head all day, and can you blame me with how catchy it is? I had no idea who sung it, but later found the name with a jump of glee.

The Veronicas are a two-piece rock band from Australia consisting of twins Jessica Origliasso and Lisa Origliasso. The twins have released a lot of music, but this song along with "4ever" are the only singles that have ever charted, following an album called 'Hook Me Up'. This is the sort of popular music that enters the UK chart, so I was sort of expecting to only see those singles and albums to be released on iTunes, but one quick glance took me by surprise. A lot of singles have been released, so why are people not buying their music? Again I'm going to have to put it down to promotion. I didn't even realise they had released any new material, and I bet only their devoted fans know about the new songs, along with hearsay.

"Untouched" were written by Toby Gad (written many famous tracks and is definitely in high demand), Jessica Origliasso and Lisa Origliasso. The song is about the twins missing their loved ones. Their vocals are effortless and amazing to hear, especially their harmonies and for a rock group it turns it on it's head and makes this amazing. This looked like the perfect rock group to get high international success, but guess it didn't work out that way.

The music video is narrative and performance based, just like all my high rated music videos. And takes a different approached to the song, and although not exactly relatable, it can be considered to be linked.

The performance side is plain and boring. They are performing in front of a bunch of people who are rocking out, except they are not doing the same. It's as if they've been told where the camera is and to never take their eyes from it. The performance scenes are supposed to show their energy on stage and to show what they would be like to see live, and therefore encourage people to go to their tours and gigs. But if all they do is stand there and sing the song, I would never want to see them, and I don't think many others would too.

The narrative is so much better, but the integrated part with the performance as well, reminds me a lot of Avril Lavigne's "Losing Grip", amongst others. The story shows a guy who both girls meet separately. First off Jess is seen with him on the couch and she soon takes off not long after, clearly telling him to wait for her. Yet when he sees Lisa walking around the club he thinks it's Jess and goes after her. They have a passionate moment. We finally return to the couch and it is soon revealed that the guy is trying to make a move on both of them, so they walk away from him together.

Again we have another male actor who no one knows who it is. So if anyone does know please post below with source. Apart from that the storyline is very watchable and engaging (unlike the performance side of things), so much so that the second time I watched it I focused on it a lot more. This is one narrative I won't be forgetting.

Overall an extremely catchy song that will be embedded in history but never lost. The music video has two sides, if I based this video on performance alone the rating would be low, but the narrative is so capturing that it brings the video back, and even tips the balance. So therefore the video gets this rating below.
