September - Satellites

Before today I have never seen this music video. Every time I come to review a music video, I look at the YouTube comments, and in this case I was a little on the dubious side, and once I clicked play, I was thinking no no no no no no no. But more on that later.

I have been struggling to come up for a Sunday re-visit. I've always been worried about doing this music video, mainly because I hadn't seen it before today. And to be honest it's a good job I haven't. This song was September's first UK release and managed to get to number 96. She subsequently swapped labels, and after 2 singles and an album with this new UK label, she swapped back again. She is becoming more and more popular and she's on the edge of her career, she could fall down and disappear from the UK altogether, which will be a big loss to us, or she could have another big hit that will secure her place in the UK. But I can feel that this is just around the corner, and I'm hoping it'll be the latter as I love her new music.

The song was written by Jonas von der Burg, Anoo Bhagavan and Niklas von der Burg. I'm never quite sure what to make of artists who usually have their songs written by other people, however September (or real name Petra Marklund) has recently started songwriting, which suggests that she wants to believe in the music she sings. This song is about being knocked down and you have to get back up again and move on. (The way I've just phrased that reminds me of Chumbawamba's "Tubthumping"). "Satellites" is surprisingly catchy, and I think the reason for that is because the chorus is repeated quite a few times.

The music video is definitely a no no. It's dreadful. Full stop. It's totally low budget, I don't like the fact that they covered her eyes while they tanned her, and then to paint around her eyes the colours of her scarfs, or using masks. It just seems pointless and I don't really understand what it has got to do with the song. I can excuse the yellow bit because a "beautiful morning" involves the sun, but the other colours just don't make sense, unless they are on about a sunrise, which the song doesn't state.

The song is about starting all over again pretty much like the sun; as it rises and then it sets, to rise all over again. However the sun has nothing to be ashamed off, whereas in the song it's about something that's happened that makes you feel like the whole world is to crash down around you.

This is a very simple, low-budget music video that isn't as good as her most recent music videos. The song got a very low chart performance, could that be because of the music video, or were the UK music channels not showing the music video often because they didn't like it either? I just find it pointless with only a little understanding here and there.

Blake Shelton - Footloose

As you may already be aware of, I have seen the new "Footloose (2011 film)" a total of two times now, and I reckon that it'll be one of those films that you can watch again and again and again, and eventually you'll lose count of how many times you have seen it. I have already reviewed one song that was released from the soundtrack which was Big & Rich Featuring Gretchen Wilson "Fake I.D.". I wasn't aware of the fact that this song was released, back then I was trying to find the music video to this song since it is the soundtrack to the film, but a music video wasn't released. Then a few weeks after reviewing "Fake I.D." Edges posted the music video on Facebook, and I've been looking forward to the day that I will review it.

Blake Shelton is a well known American country artist. he has been going since 2001, but there really hasn't ever been a place for country music in the UK, with only a few rarities managing to get into the chart. But now country is becoming much more stronger, we actually have a country chart. Not only that but I believe we have Taylor Swift to thank for managing to make Country popular again. She has lined the path for many country artists with Lady Antebellum and Sugarland appearing in the chart recently. But will Blake Shelton have a go at it? We'll just have to wait and see won't we? He hit the US TV screens as a judge/coach in the US version of The Voice, where he starred alongside Cee Lo Green (also sung a track for "Footloose"), Christina Aguilera and Adam Levine (lead singer of Maroon 5). So what's next for this country singer? Maybe a crack at the UK chart?

I like the music video, it uses footage from the film, but in a whole different aspect that surprised me when I watched this for the first time. The song was written by Kenny Loggins and Dean Pitchford. Kenny Loggins originally sung the song for the original version of Footloose. He was asked to be a part of the 2011 film, but he refused, but later, after the film's release he was quoted as saying he regrets not helping.

I like the use of the film being shown in a drive-in cinema. I've never been to a drive-in cinema before, but I've seen it a lot in films and on TV shows. I like that idea, I don't think I've come across any other music video soundtrack to have the film being screened behind the artist.

I also like the fact that it tells a story,. that is well put together and relates well with the song's storyline. I also like how people come out of their cars and start dancing rather than watching the film. There is just enough film footage and just enough of Blake Shelton's performance at the Drive-In cinema, I think they lined it up well and haven't shown too much of anything.

Overall the music video fits in perfectly with the song and is pretty good to watch. I wish I was there, it looks like fun. I like the whole idea of screening the film with the performance. So I have no choice but to give it this rating.

Avril Lavigne - Losing Grip

Avril Lavigne has released a number of singles and albums, she has recently came back to music and she hasn't performed that well in the charts, unfortunately. Even though the songs are really emotional and much more powerful. She is currently working on her fifth studio album, which I'm really excited about.

This single was taken from her first ever album "Let Go", it was written by Avril Lavigne and Clif Magness. It is about losing grip with her boyfriend as they were not meant to be. The lyrics are very personal and you can tell she means every single one of them. She has this distinct voice to this song that makes "Losing Grip" stand out from the others on the album, she sounds a lot like her fellow Canadian, Alanis Morissette and it's really powerful. Furthermore when she sings "crying out loud, I'm crying out loud" her voice reminds me of Amy Studt's and I'm pretty sure those lyrics (or something along those lines) are used in one of Amy Studt's songs, but I've been searching and I don't know where.

The music video is short, and simple it is a live performance which shows her energetic vibe when she's on tours. This is to make us feel like we're actually there. And it also shows that what she is singing comes straight from her heart. Also she has 4 of her backing band with her, who are all attempting to become more well-known, and are no longer Avril Lavigne's backing band. The people who appear on stage with her are Jesse Colburn (who has wrote quite a few songs at the moment), Evan Taubenfeld (Singer and songwriter, and collaborated with Avril on her new album, and Avril collaborated with him on his new album), Matt Brann (since leaving the band he has helped other bands with their albums) and Charlie Moniz (who isn't doing much as far as I'm aware of).

I like the idea of also having Avril Lavigne in the crowd, pushing her way through, and herself being pushed. It links in well with the song, because it suggests the sort of relationship she is in where they keep trying and one keeps pushing and then they push back, but nothing is working. Also she is alone, usually at a concert you are with someone, so in theory you could say she had the tickets but her boyfriend didn't turn up so she had to go it alone. But then she sees her boyfriend in the crowd (well we presume it's her boyfriend, otherwise she's punching a complete stranger).

Overall it's a great song, and I'm sure I could listen to it over and over again. The music video is average, and can be compared to "What The Hell" as she also crowd surfs and does a little gig in that video too. But there really isn't a lot going on, but it's subtle and interesting at the same time.

JoJo - Too Little Too Late

JoJo (real name Joanna Levesque) is one of these singers who was pushed into the music scene at such a young age, usually there comes problems with this sort of thing such as Britney Spears, Lindsay Lohan and Billie Piper. But JoJo has had no problems whatsoever, apart from her record company, which is pretty minor compared to the other young artists. She is making a comeback slowly, but surely with a new brilliant single "Disaster", it's music video has just been released to the UK, so people fear not, it looks like it will be released here in the UK, in a few months time.

This song was written by Josh Alexander, Billy Steinberg and Ruth-Anne Cunningham. They aren't as well known as others, but Billy Steinberg has worked with a number of artists, and Ruth-Anne Cunningham has worked with the likes of Pixie Lott and other well-known UK artists, she is also a singer and has had success in Ireland. The song is very emotional and JoJo has connected with the song amazingly as her vocals are really good, you would think she had some writing credits but she doesn't and this quite surprises me as the music video is also very emotional.

The music video links in with the song really well, it is about being disappointed and getting over your first love, and the music video displays that perfectly. I like the fact that it relates well and although there isn't a lot going on, it is emotionally interesting, and it seems very real.

I like the start, the way they talk about what they saw and JoJo even starts off by saying she's disappointed. This is key at the start of the music video, as you are more aware of the feelings they feel for each other right from the start. I also like the fact that it starts to rain when she puts the teddy in the bin. It's not the teddy's fault, and it must be terribly lonely in the bin. But the significance of it shows that she doesn't want to be reminded.

A lot of people have commented on the showing of Football (or should I say soccer as a lot of countries call it). I personally don't know what they are complaining about. Americans play Soccer as well, they even made a few films to do with it (called "She's The Man" and "Goal" amongst others). And I know a lot of people in the UK make jokes about football and America, but it's still a sport recognised all over the world, so there's no need for complaints.

Overall I really like the song, and the accompanying music video fits perfectly. I like the way everything works out incredibly and the emotion is sent our way. I can't say anything bad about this music video, so I think it deserves this rating.

Lady Gaga Featuring Colby O'Donis - Just Dance

Lady Gaga (real name Stefani Germanotta) has quickly become one of the most well-known singers, in just a few years. We all know what to expect from her, but there was a time when she was the new girl on the block, she may not have been as extravagant as she is now, but she was still surprisingly shocking. This is her first ever single release, and this music video was her first one. However, she had been in the music industry for quite some time, developing her song writing. She was nicknamed Lady Gaga after Queen's song "Radio Ga Ga" because a lot of her songs were appearing in the charts (however this story may not be true since there are others saying the star name was created during a promotional meeting).

This song was written by Lady GaGa, Akon (who appears in this music video) and RedOne. All three are well-known. Akon has had a number of hits here in the UK, and RedOne has produced so many well-known songs, that I'm sure if you looked at the credits you'll know at least one of the tracks. This song is amazing and surprisingly shows off Lady Gaga's vocals straight away. The song is about having a good time no matter what you're going through, to do whatever will make you happy and forget about your worries for just a little while.

I have to admit something here. When I first came across this music video back in 2008, I had never heard of it, but I found it quite catchy. So I tried to guess who it was, and I thought it might have been Christina Aguilera, but then I thought it seemed a bit over the top for her, she's been there and done that. So I was interested to see the banner coming up and it said: Lady Gaga. That was the first time I ever saw her and this music video, and I knew that song was going to chart high.

I like the fact that it links in well with the song, people are dancing, and having fun and just forgetting about any problems they may have. Lady Gaga is given choreography, which she performs well, but the dancing is very limited compared to her most recent music videos.

I personally find the paddling pool, a bit over the top, there was no exact need to it, but by now we shouldn't be surprised at what is included in Lady Gaga's music videos. We also have Colby O'Donis singing in the music video; he hasn't had much success lately, and there's no sign of him here in the UK. Not only that but Akon makes a guest appearance along with Space Cowboy, who is a DJ and has remixed quite a few Lady Gaga tracks.

Well, that's all I have to say, there are minor things going on in this music video, but that is what makes it good, and house parties tend to be filmed pretty well in music videos. It links perfectly which is good since I don't think it would've made number one in the UK otherwise. I have dropped a star because of the pool, which has next to no links and wasn't needed.
