This is the first time I have ever reviewed one of Christina Aguilera's music videos on this blog. She made an appearance once as I reviewed "Moves Like Jagger" by Maroon 5, in which she features in. However this is an early song from her, when she was still finding her way, and she sings it beautifully. I decided to do this music video today as I'm going to see the X Factor tour in Birmingham at the LG Arena tonight, and Little Mix sang this song on the show, and they sung it perfectly as it related to Jesy lots as she was having a tough time. This song linked in amazingly and I hope they sing it tonight.
Christina Aguilera has been going since 1999 and has always been pit against Britney Spears, and although I believe Christina has a strong empowering voice, Britney was favoured more, and people thought Britney had finally won, but most recently she has come out on top, with Britney following her shadow, this will be a battle that will last a lifetime, and will get more and more intriguing as the years go by. However they've known each other since the start, when they both became part of the Mickey Mouse Club and have claimed that this rival is nothing more than banter between old friend. Yes that's right Christina admitted in an interview that her and Britney go way back and are really old friends.
"Beautiful" was written by Linda Perry, who is known for being the main singer from 4 Non Blondes, she has had a few solo attempts, but now sticks to songwriting, and has worked for Christina a few times, and most of her notable songs was written by Linda Perry. Christina's voice matched this song amazingly. However I totally get what some people have said, such as why such a pretty girl like Christina gets to sing this song? However there are haters out there who'll do anything to make her feel down, and that's where I think the emotion came from for this song.
The music video is very controversial, but also fits in perfectly, I don't know any other better way of doing this, and it would have reflected badly on anyone who refused to show it, as it's extremely clever, and I can't help but laugh at some bits in it, and it shows that people are just people and everyone's the same no matter what they look like, as long as you're happy inside, it doesn't matter what others think, and if you aren't happy, find a way of loving yourself just the way you are.
I like how they've put Christina in a dirty horrible room, it shows she is pretty sitting right there in that room. Again it's clever, if they would have put her among some people then she may not be the only beautiful person. So I'm quite surprised by this.
Overall, I love this music video, it's almost a short film in a few minutes, and I love how it stands up for all the issues of the world, such as an underweight girl, a skinny guy lifting weights, a girl being bullied, a goth being ignored, and how it touches on LGBT such as a gay couple and a transgendered person. This is extremely clever, and although subtle it creates this huge effect that's still being talked about today.
Britney Spears has gained quite a few number ones over here in the UK. But hasn't had one since 2004, which was with "Everytime". This single was released as her first single from her album, which is titled the same. She is definitely the biggest pop star around, and I can definitely see her becoming bigger still and I reckon she's going to be around for the rest of her life. The only problem I have is that her last two singles failed to make the UK chart, therefore suggesting she needs to do more promoting here in the UK, if she wishes to get back on our good sides.
This song was written by Max Martin and Rami Yacoub. The former is extremely well-known in the song writing world, and has been mentioned in my blog more times than I can count. As for the latter... Well Rami, has wrote songs for a number of artists, but I wondered where I've seen the name before, and so I went searching and found out that Rami wrote One Direction's "What Makes You Beautiful" with 2 other songwriters. I think Britney felt an immediate connection to this song, even though she personally didn't write it. Her voice is different now to what it is here, I'm not entirely sure if they did anything with it in the studio... But I'm pretty sure, when I saw her on live TV when I was younger, that she had the same tone of voice as she had here.
The music video was all Britney's idea and she wanted to be seen "dancing on Mars", which is exactly what the director has done. I think it's clever and totally out of this world, and no other artist has done anything similar. There are however other music videos that attempted something similar, but they've all failed.
Apparently, according to MTV News archives, that while recording this music video, "part or all of a camera fell" on Britney and she needed four stitches, and she might have been concussed. After four hours rest, she was up and ready to carry on for the music video (for full article Click Here).
I do like the choreography, it's got this kind of twist that makes you intrigued by it, as if she is dancing every single word she sings, and that's exactly what's coming across. I also like the bridge, which is extremely clever, I like the reference to the Titanic film, since the old lady drops the "Heart of The Ocean", and I find it how funny that he went through all that trouble for nothing, and he just shrugs it off? And Moonwalks (wait, I should say Marswalks)? I very much that would happen, especially nowadays.
Overall this music video is a BIG production, it must have taken them ages to come up with everything so perfectly, there's both narrative and performance, and it's the perfect mixture. My favourite bit is when Britney dances on the white pad, as it shows she knows how to dance as all her moves are clear-cut. This was one of the best music videos from 2000, but compared to what is out now, it seems old and unoriginal. My rating is based on what I would have thought of the music video back in 2000.
Britney Spears has been around for ages, she has released a number of hits, but unfortunately she has yet to gain a number one album here in the UK. However she has had a number of singles that have topped the chart, but "Everytime" was her last number one in the UK back in 2004, and it doesn't look like she will get to the top spot again. Her last two singles "I Wanna Go" and "Criminal" didn't even make the chart, so is Britney falling so fast that there will not be any pieces left to build her back up? Or will she get to the top spot with her next single and manage to release that parachute?
This song was written by Britney Spears and Annette Stamatelatos. This is probably one of the reasons why this managed to get to number one because it is so personal to Britney and she was the one who wrote it, which is different to her new releases because she doesn't sing it with the passion it clearly deserves. This single is amazing and the music video fits in perfectly. Apparently the song is a reaction to Justin Timberlake's "Cry Me A River", Britney and her younger sister Jamie Lynn Spears, were shocked at the music video for "Cry Me A River" as it showed a side of Britney that she didn't want revealed. So this is more of a comeback, and it works perfectly.
The music video is amazing, I've watched it a number of times and realised it's probably the most emotional music video that was ever made for Britney. There's a lot to like about it, and it gives us a bit of an insight about her, that we wouldn't normally have. Personally, a good music video is sometimes what influences a single to get to the top spot, which explains why this is her most recent number one single to date.
The music video shows her concepts of fame and the behind the scenes reflection on how she really feels. I think it's quite clever how she gets mad at her boyfriend for being angry at the photographer, but really she is angry at the amount of paparazzi that just wants the perfect shot to expose her. It shows a perfect struggle, in which she doesn't want to let her guard down, not even for a minute, because if she does it could be the end of her, or that what she thought back then.
The music video also suggests that she can't put up with it all, and in a moment of hesitation she ends up attempting suicide, this is basically letting the paparazzi win, they've got her right where they want her, and in a world without Britney would music now be the same? I like how we see her running back, as if she wants to be alive and not dead, and then she comes awake with a smile. That smile could be for anything, it could show she isn't going to let her stardom fail her, that she's going to live life to the full. But it could also reference a threat, that this is how easy she can disappear from us all, so back off or else. It's quite inspirational and shows how gutsy she can be.
Overall I like this music video, but it's simple and slow and not much going on. It can be read so many different ways that complaints had been pushed through here and there, but there were people who liked it and didn't want to complaints to prevent the showing of the video. I like it because it shows Britney as herself, we get to see parts of her that the paparazzi has no chance of getting, and I think that is the great bit about it.
After being ill for the last week and a half, I'm back to reviewing, I'm sorry for being away so long, but I had next to no energy and rarely went on the computer. So kick starting this week off is New Release, and it's Britney Spears once again. Apparently this was released last week, but on other sites it says it is released this week. And I was going to do the X Factor Winner's single as new release, but I thought, since I have not yet seen this music video on UK music channels yet, due to it probably being banned, I thought I might as well as a little treat.
Over the years Britney has released a hell of a lot of singles. This one is definitely one of those songs that eventually grow on you, but thus far has yet to make the chart, and I doubt it ever will, it's such a pity as this song is really good, and has totally grown on me. This is her 2nd single off her latest album "Femme Fatale" that hasn't charted in the UK Chart. It has also been ages since she has had a number one hit in the UK, the last song being "Everytime" back in 2004. Will she ever become the star we all used to love and like? Or will she end up having chart failures for the rest of her singing career. As long as she keeps releasing in the UK, I'm happy.
"Criminal" was written by Max Martin, Shellback and Tiffany Amber. The song is about being in love with a Criminal, a bad boy, an outlaw, and pleading to her mom that it's going to be alright and not to worry. The song was chosen as the Fourth single from her album via facebook, where Britney held a poll for which song her fans wanted to see as her next single, and "Criminal" won.
This music video links in with the song perfectly. I love a lot about this music video, and I'm a little upset that it isn't shown on the music channels often (if at all). I think that was one of the main reasons the song didn't chart here in the UK. The music video has caused a lot of controversy, especially in the UK, due to the fact that it shows the use of guns. Internet video sharing sites such as Vevo and YouTube has commented saying that there is explicit sexual scenes within the music video that shouldn't be there. Britney's director for this music video: Chris Marrs Pilero has commented saying: that it surprised him that it has a lot of controversy "because don't you guys have television shows out there that show crime? It's really strange to me. I don't understand why pop stars are put on such a high pedestal over other celebrities" (To see more of what he said click here)
I love the start of this music video, with it's opening sequence. Britney is seen with this guy, she doesn't really like. I think he's showing off and she's not smiling at all. He gets annoyed with her and she runs away with tears coming down her face. After putting some of her own perfume on called "Radiance". The starting theme is inspired by the film "Can't Hardly Wait". After coming out the bathroom she finds her boyfriend playfully chatting to this girl. Britney tells the girl "So you're not working the street corner tonight I see?" and this makes him angry. He then shoves her outside and slaps her across the face. Then this guy (a criminal played by Jason Trawick, Britney's real-life boyfriend), punches him and then they escape, but not after Britney does some damage of her own by kicking him in a certain place using the words "wait.... [kick] now I'm ready". I love this opening sequence and I could watch it over and over again.
There is another cross-reference with another music video, and that is Green Day's "21 Guns". Because Jason and Britney are kissing as bullets go through their apartment and somehow misses them in the middle. Also a lot of people has stated that it links in with Rihanna's music videos "Man Down" and "We Found Love".
Overall this music video links in perfectly with the song, and the controversy around the music video is fair enough, but it isn't as bad as others try and state it to be. Furthermore, the prevention of showing this music video at certain times in the UK (not sure if that's right, but I have yet to see it on the music channels), may have been the reason why this has yet to chart.
Miley Cyrus is the daughter of Billy Rae Cyrus, her real name is Destiny Cyrus, but she was always smiling as a child and her parents nicknamed her smiley, so therefore she chose Miley Cyrus as her star name. This song charted at number 11 (one of three of Miley Cyrus' songs to get to that chart position, which is her highest charting position to date, the other two singles are "See You Again" and "The Climb"). Apparently, Miley Cyrus is ready to work on her next album, which is surprising since after her most recent album she released reports that she wanted to focus on her film career rather than music. But maybe she's come across inspiration to guide her back to music.
The song was written by Dr. Luke, Claude Kelly and Jessica Cornish (now known as Jessie J). These three are really well known, Dr. Luke has been mentioned on my blog more times than I can remember. Claude Kelly is a new person to my blog, but he has written songs for a number of X factor finalists and other well known British performers. Jessica Cornish (or should I say Jessie J) is a UK artist, who is getting high chart positions here in the UK and elsewhere. The song is about having a party and just having fun, dancing to the tune the DJ is playing and just enjoying it any way you can.
The music video is WOW. I love it and it reminds me of what I think America is like, I can just imagine it being this way, and it's understandable why this song was such a hit, because the song was aimed at teenagers. The video relates perfectly with the song and the editing was done really good.
I like her cowboy boots, and how the song references stilettos and how she must have missed the memo. It perceives her as a misfit, and that she is still enjoying the party the way she wants to. I like the USA flag behind her, it reminds me of "Moves Like Jagger" by Maroon 5 and Christina Aguilera. I also like how the song mentions Britney and Jay-Z. And suggests Miley Cyrus likes to party. Which is understandable for an 19 year old girl.
I really like the reference to Grease. Miley wanted to pay tribute to one of her favourite films and also her parents courting days. The grease reverence is the bit where John Travolta sings "Sandy", he walks over to a jungle gym, where he sits on a swing while projections goes on behind him. This is similar to what happens in Miley's video, except she's standing on the swing. For her parents courting days, they included a Drive-In Theatre, which they called Corral Drive-In, as that is similar to the Kentucky Drive-In, Miley's parents had their first date.
Overall, this is a great music video, to go with a great song. The video is simple but inspirational at the same time, and it could have been on of the reasons for why the song charted so high. I'm going to drop a star because there isn't much going on, it could have been bigger and better, but it works perfectly and I don't think it ought to be changed.
I bet you all have been waiting for me to review this music video. I have to admit, it's been worrying me as this is such a big music video it is going to be difficult to review. But I will do my best and be as fair as I can be as I always am.
Rihanna, real name Robyn Rihanna Fenty, has recently became a very well known international star. She has worked very hard to get this far, and it looks like she will be keeping that crown for a little bit longer. She will be performing a song on the X Factor this Sunday, and we all know it is going to be amazing.
"We Found Love" is the first single taken from her new album Talk That Talk. It was written by Calvin Harris, who collaborated with Rihanna on this song, and further proves why this song features him even though there is no vocal performance from him. Rihanna has this strong, clear and powerful voice that makes any song she sings sound amazing. I like how she manages to connect to the song easily and that is shown throughout the music video.
I like how the video starts off with an introduction, it kind of sets the scene and makes it more understandable to people who are watching it. Agyness Deyn is the person who talks at the beginning and this is what she says: "It's like you're screaming but no one can hear. You almost feel ashamed that someone could be that important, that without them, you feel like nothing. No one will ever understand how much it hurts. You feel hopeless, like nothing can save you. And when it's over and it's gone, you almost wish that you could have all that bad stuff back so you can have the good."
There is a lot to like about this music video, and I have to admit, I am surprised that it was all filmed in Ireland. Initially it was all going to be filmed in a field, but when Rihanna started taking her clothes off the farmer who owned the field asked for the filming to be stopped, at which point it did and filming then took place in Belfast. The farmer turned around to news reporters that he had never heard of Rihanna and had no idea who she was. Personally I think the farmer did us a favour as the music video could have turned out similar to "Only Girl (In The World)" and although the music video for that song is powerful, it is a bit boring after watching it more than 5 times, and I stopped watching it on the music channels. However for "We Found Love" the narrative is amazing and I think that is why this music video makes it one of Rihanna's best music videos to date.
Some bits are a little annoying and makes you wonder why they did that. The main one is when Rihanna is sick on the side walk, but instead of bringing up disgusting stuff, out comes pink and white streamers. At first I thought they had run out of budget and couldn't afford to buy some soup or whatever actors are using nowadays. But after a closer inspection, it could suggest a distorted reality, therefore some bits aren't real and suggests that Rihanna is imagining them, which kind of makes sense since at the start you see the amount of drugs, and the amount of smoking, and how sometimes Rihanna and her boyfriend (played by Dudley O'Shaughnessy) look totally out of it.
There's so much going on in this music video it is difficult to comment on it all. However there is a lot of comparisons between Dudley O'Shaughnessy and Rihanna's ex-boyfriend Chris Brown. There are some scenes that even suggest that the video was based on the ex-couple because on the evening of the Grammy Awards Rihanna was subjected to physical violence in a car by Chris Brown. One of the scenes in the video link exactly to that where Dudley O'Shaughnessy is driving recklessly and Rihanna is begging him to stop. She then gets struck around the face. There's definitely a link from Rihanna's past and this video.
There is also a link with Britney Spears' "Criminal" music video, because both contain bad guys, they were both filmed in the UK and they both contain scenes of sex, violence and crime. But also both videos have had a lot of controversial in the UK, with "Criminal" being banned from being shown in the UK based on the fact that the "Criminal" is holding a gun.
Overall I really like this music video and it links in with this song brilliantly. Some bits I don't like such as the distort reality, but that is not too bad. I like the narration, both the words that are spoken at the start and the storyline as a whole. I have no choice but to give this music video the rating it deserves. And this song is definitely worth the number on it managed to get here in the UK!
Now a lot of you have been waiting for this music video to appear on here, well now it is. Avril Lavigne is definitely my favourite female artist, I'm not entirely sure why but she is. I recently bought her new album 'Goodbye Lullaby', and I've played it way too many times, it's so powerful and endearing. This song is definitely one of them. After two releases this one could be her last from this album. We've had the pop song "What the Hell", and recently "Smile" that failed to chart well here in the UK. Now we have this song, by the looks of the iTunes top 1000 downloads she is definitely not fairing well with this song, clearly she needs to do a lot more promoting, or it's just this country isn't taking in her new soulful songs, which is such a shame as I reckon they are her most emotional songs she's ever sung so far.
This song was written by Avril Lavigne, Max Martin and Shellback, once again. These three create a perfect song, and they should definitely team up some more in the future. Max Martin has once again appeared as a writing credit, which definitely suggests that he's in high demand, and who could blame the artists if great tracks come out of his head? This song is about wanting your partner to be near you when you need them. Clearly the person Avril is wishing for can't be there, and that's why she's so upset. A lot of people have said that this song was written about Deryck Whibley (Avril Lavigne's ex-husband), and I kind of think they might be right. For those of you who have been living under a rock (or abducted by aliens, you choose), Deryck Whibley is the vocalist for Sum 41 (I shall do a review of one of their music videos sometime in the future, mark my words). He and Avril got married in 2006, and in 2009 ended on good terms, they are still friends, and Deryck helped with her album Goodbye Lullaby. Anyway, thinking about it, this song could be based on when they were both doing their career's imagine going on tour and leaving your wife at home, you wouldn't see her for at least a few months (also vice versa), and that must be difficult on any relationship. And I think this is where this song comes in (this is all speculation and I have no sources to prove what I'm saying.)
This music video is obviously low-budget, but who cares? It's amazing. It's emotional and awe-inspiring, if this can be made from something so simple, then it begs to question what else is going to come from Avril? I like the tears, it makes it a lot more emotional and apparently they were real. I like the flower, it suggests that the person Avril is singing about gave her that flower and now she wants him to come to her but he's not there, so she takes it out on the flower, poor flower, but obviously it was already harmed because a flower doesn't go up in flames like that (well I don't think it does, I've never actually tried so I'm not entirely sure). I also like the bath and how she considers drowning herself, but seriously it isn't worth it, and I think she gathers that at the last second.
There is a lot of comparisons with this very emotional song and video. First up is Demi Lovato's "Skyscraper", which has not been released here in the UK unfortunately, but both videos portray an in depth emotion that shocks you to disbelief. Another video that's similar is Britney Spears' "Everytime", but that's purely only because of the drowning in the bath idea, but the two scenes portray different meanings.
Overall, it's another amazing song and a perfect accompanying music video. You may think I'm being biased because I'm a fan of Avril's but if you watch I really am not. I like how emotive the song and the music video is and I don't see how a better job of this could have been done.
Frixion is a new boy band on the block, but will they succeed or will they fail? That is the question. This is their first singles and it's been released already, however it has not charted, leaving us thinking failure could be on the edges. However I think if they promoted themselves enough they would be the next big things. The band consists of 3 members who are David Stanton, Neil Painter and Johnny Wright. Each band member comes from a different place, Birmingham, Blackpool and London, and they are all apparently over 6 foot, according to their facebook page. The music channels are in favour of this music video as they play it quite a few times when I'm watching them, hence why I'm doing this review today. Is there a place for them here in the UK? I'm not too sure, we'll just have to sit back and check they may do well but they need to go more commercial and do a lot more promoting otherwise they will fail.
This song is very catchy, as much I hate to admit it, I do actually like this song, but I bet if I hear it a few more times, I'll get bored by it. I'm not usually into this sort of music, and it's going to be difficult for this band to break into the UK singles chart, will they be able to do it? I don't know, we'll just have to wait and see I guess.
The music video is kind of, hmmm..... I like it and then I don't, there's not much of a storyline and I don't really get the whole robot (mechanic) thing. So let me work through this.... David, Neil and Johnny are all robots, and they are missing body parts. These three girls are mechanics and they're here to fix them up. But in doing so it makes these three guys "under the influence" of these girls? I sort of get it, but it is very different and pretty complicated at times. I don't think everyone would understand it.
I have to say this... One of the girls looks a little like Erin Karpluk (I know her as Erica Strange in Being Erica, but she has been in a lot of different films and TV series). I know it's not but she definitely looks like a younger version of her at least. This music video also features a place where Britney Spears filmed "Criminal", so I presume this could be considered interesting.
The lyrics/word/pictures that is used during which the three guys are singing together is a little over the top, it makes it seem like they are trying to interest kids with their music video, especially with all the "Yeah"'s and the drums.
Overall I'm not at all sure what to make of this music video, I presume it's okay for their first music video, and probably is better than other artist's first music videos. I like the fact that there is three girls rather than just the one, because each of the guys could have their own girl, unlike One Direction's "What Makes You Beautiful". However I kind of started talking about little minor bits, and so it makes me think that my attention was lost, therefore I think my rating is pretty fair.
I have been obsessed with Billie Piper since she released her first music video way back in 1998, now, after draining her music career down the plug, she is now into acting and she's most notable for playing Rose Tyler, the doctor's companion in the revised series of Doctor Who. I have to admit this song is probably my favourite from her, it's one of her most up-beat singles that have amazing choreography. This song is very reminiscent of the late 90's early 00's. And it's very early Britney, in the choreography and the song, and to be honest some people thought Billie Piper could have been the UK's answer to Britney, and it's a shame that she has given music up altogether, I know that if she did comeback, even for one album and a few singles, it would be the most hyped up comeback of the past decade, beating the likes of The Stone Roses, Steps and probably Take That too.
Day & Night was written by Billie Piper, Eliot Kennedy, Mark Cawley, Mike Percy and Tim Lever. I like it when the artist also gets writing credits, it suggests he or she can put emotion and interest into the song and it possibly helps to get the single higher in the UK chart. Mike Percy and Tim Lever are best known as being in a band called Dead or Alive (known for their single "You Spin Me Round (Like a Record)" and their lead vocalist Pete Burns). Although I could not see Dead or Alive singing this song at all.
This music video doesn't link in with the song at all, it doesn't have a narrative, and I think this is the one problem with this music video that I can come up with. I like everything else though. At the start when she enters that really weird club (seriously who would want to go there if it's so secluded and empty?), she is wearing something that people think is similar to what Rose Tyler from Doctor Who would wear and to be honest I think I agree. I'm quite surprised that a few of Billie's music videos have links with Doctor Who, like "Because We Want To", which suggests she was destined to be the companion.
I really like the dance choreography, it is very early 2000's and she is a really good dancer. I also like the washing powder bit where she spins and lets the washing powder spread everywhere, I bet she was really dizzy after that. I also like how they use technology to show how she gets up on that perspex square, I think it's funny and I bet she wished she could actually jump that high.
Overall I like the song and I like the dance sequences, however there's no narrative storyline, and I think that's what lets it down compared to other music videos. I will hope for the whole of my life that she will return to music at one point, even if it is only for a short while, because I think it would be interesting in how she would fair in today's market, and I think she'd get a number one easily.
Believe it our not, in this music video JoJo is 12/13 but she's so confident in herself anyone can easily mistake her for 18. I do feel a little sorry for her, I don't think a 13 year old or younger should be pushed into the music industry, it's pressurizing and even 16 year old's find it difficult, examples include Britney Spears and Billie Piper. But JoJo, real name Joanna Levesque, is one young artist who hasn't been misled and she's so focused on music that no problems have occurred, leading to the fact that JoJo is a very strong individual and can do what she wants when she puts her mind to it. Recently she has been hidden away, no music released and she has to build her fan base back. She has disappeared due to record label problems and law suits, which has pushed back her comeback even more. But finally she is ready for a comeback, and she needs to do a hell of a lot of promoting as most people have forgotten her name. But I've been a fan since this song, and I don't care if I have to wait 20 years, I will always love her music and I can't wait for her to come back.
This song is about heartbreak and telling your partner to go and disappear because you don't want him/her no more. JoJo's voice is amazing and you really feel the emotions pass over to you, which quite surprises me since she is quite young. You would think that she wrote at least part of the song because she displays the song perfectly however it was actually written by Soulshock & Karlin, Alex Cantrell and Philip "Silky" White. Soulshock & Karlin are a duo who have written and produced many songs by artists such as "2Pac" and "Jamelia".
I like the music video very much, it's one I can watch again and again and never get bored with it, however it is the usual teenage, high-school music video. I like the use of the cameraman being the guy JoJo is singing about and telling him "it's the end of you and me", it's something that isn't used at all now and so it definitely picks this music video out from a crowd. Some of the scenes are a little cheap, such as the bathroom bit where she's looking through the mirrors, if you look closely enough, in between those mirrors, the wall behind JoJo is the exact same, which suggests that she's standing behind 3 squares with nothing in them, which are frames, however it's easily mistaken, and it's rare you don't notice.
The dance moves are very then, for that era of music. You definitely wouldn't see any artist of today doing the "shoulder shrug" (I just made up a name for it, but you know what I'm on about). JoJo pulls it off amazingly, but it is definitely the type of dance choreography that was in, in 2004. And I will definitely say it again, she really doesn't look 13, when she first came out, a lot of my friends fantasised about her.
Overall, I remember enjoying this music video when I was young, and I can't wait for her come back, because I can see it being one of the best American comebacks in this decade! I love this song and it'll never get boring or old, it's mainstream pop and it's still what people are into. The music video suits perfectly and although it is considered old now and you can see the problems with it compared to what is coming out now, it doesn't matter. I hope you all think my rating is fair and not at all biased.
This music video turned up on the music channels today, and it's been stuck in my head ever since, so I thought I might as well review it, and yes I am aware that it is yet another Britney song that I'm reviewing, but she just has to stop appearing on the music channels in the morning. This song was released as her third single from her first studio album "...Baby One More Time", and it became a big international hit, gaining number 5 here in the UK (compared with the charting of her most recent songs, that is an incredible charting position). The single version differs slightly to the original album version. Britney re-recorded the vocals for a remix version called "The Stop! Remix". The remix was then included in the film "Drive Me Crazy" and so this song was released under the remixed version. There has only been a few cover versions, one by a nu metal band called SugarComa, and a jazz styled version by Richard Cleese. Selena Gomez and The Scene also sung this song on a tour of theirs for a tribute to Britney.
This song was written by Max Martin, Jörgen Elofsson, Per Magnusson and David Kreuger. Again we see Max Martin as the head writer and again shows how well known and big he is and how good his songs are because they pop up here there and everywhere. The song is a teen-dance sort of song, and is really catchy, it is about Britney falling in love with someone and he's constantly on her mind and at times she can't fall asleep because "I just can't sleep" and "keeps me up all night". Her voice is really nice to listen to in this song and she has that quirkiness that most of the female pop stars had back in the 90s. And Although this song is late 90s it is probably one of the last songs people classed as cheesy-pop. But to be honest, everyone still loves cheesy-pop, but are embarrassed to admit it.
This music video was created because of the film "Drive Me Crazy" who wanted this song to be released as part of the soundtrack. Two main stars from the film also appear in this music video, these stars are Melissa Joan Hart (most known for playing Sabrina in "Sabrina the Teenage Witch") and Adrian Grenier (most known for playing Vincent Chase in "Entourage"). So in theory this music video is definitely a soundtrack video, although clips from the film are not included, and a whole new spin on things are created, which is really interesting.
Again Britney has a big choreography scene, and it is pretty reminiscent of the 90's sort of dance styles, and if you compare the dance moves she's doing there to the ones that can be seen in "Hold It Against Me" or "Till The World Ends" then you can tell that she isn't really doing that much in this music video, and that it is just really hyped up. I like the fact that she isn't the lead character in this music video, and although it looks like it's going to be that way at the start when she is in her waitress outfit, I'm surprised that other characters take a more lead role, which then shows off Britney's choreographed moves and scenes, which is definitely different to her other music videos. Also they've made her look even younger here, which is good I suppose as it suggests vulnerability, and therefore can suggest that the person Britney is in love with doesn't know that she likes him, only she can't stop thinking about him.
Overall I like the song, it's so catchy that even if it was released today, I could still see it getting into the top 20 at least, and there's still a market for this type of music. I like the music video, I like the fact that it has linked up the film with the music video and used two people who star in the film. However, I still feel like it's lacking something, it's not as big as a production as the others and doesn't really stand out that much. So that is the reason why I have gone with this rating.
This song is very well known here in the UK, it made chart history by being the longest running single at number one during the 21st century, and it's a wonder if anyone will be able to defeat that? I don't think so. The media turned up a lot of things about this single and after a push and a shove, Rihanna (real name Robyn Fenty) managed to gain 10 weeks at number one here in the UK. But also it gained the "Rihanna's Curse" which I'll talk about later.
This song was written by many people, one of these people was Jay-Z who also performs a rap at the start of this song. The song was first given to Britney, but her label turned it down because she already had enough songs for her "Blackout" album. It was also given to Taio Cruz, and although he wanted it, he failed to convince his record company. It was then given to L.A. Reid who then passed it on, and finally it made it's way to Rihanna. She has released loads of songs and albums since then and has yet to beat this record, will she be able to do that in the future? I'm not sure, can a single really last more than ten weeks at number one nowadays? With the amount of different singles being released every week, and artists only last between 1 and 5 weeks at number one, it'll be very interesting to see if a single does stay at the top long enough to have the potential to beat this record, but I don't see it happening.
The song is now considered as Rihanna's signature song, and you definitely link the song with Rihanna . The song is about a romantic relationship and the strength of the two people in that relationship. Although Rihanna didn't write the song, and so could be considered unable to put emotion towards it; her voice makes the song even more perfect and you can definitely see that she has at least some connection to the song.
The music video heavily links in with the umbrella part, although has no connection to the emotion of the song. I really do like the dance choreography with the umbrellas, and I would really have liked to have seen how they made it, as I could definitely see a lot of umbrellas going here, there and everywhere. I also like the use of the water, obviously it is computer works, and it also suggests that Rihanna is the umbrella herself, which kind of joins in with the whole relationship thing, since she controls the water, and can move out of it's way and even push it into another direction, and she hardly gets wet, so it suggests that the relationship could be strong by standing "under my umbrella ella ella".
Now I HAVE to talk about the triangle significance, a lot of people have referenced it to the Illuminati symbol lately. Although this is doubtful, and it is just an idea that Rihanna and her director came up with. during this bit, she is naked but covered in silver paint, which was re-applied after every shoot. This bit doesn't link in well with the song as I can't think of any references, although it does put Rihanna's career forward into a more of a mainstream success, which she got, and although her recent videos have caused a lot of controversy, this is sometimes referred to as possibly worse than her recent ones (according to Rihanna).
Now onto the Rihanna curse. When this single managed to get to number one here in the UK, we had a lot of disasters including extreme rainfall and flooding. The Sun (a UK national newspaper, for those of you who don't know) decided that these two events were connected. They brought up ideas and even said that the single gave bad luck to this country and even mentioned that the video was shot on Friday the 13th. The newspaper suggested people should help by kicking it off the top spot, and even suggested other songs people should buy. This seems a little far-fetched, but when Rihanna's song was knocked off the weather conditions became better. Not only that but there was similar stories in New Zealand and Romania. In New Zealand there were some worst storms they have ever had including tornadoes and flooding, but everything stopped when this single got replaced at the top spot. In Romania another storm hit, at the start of one of the driest summer's they've had, but as the song climbed down the chart it cleared up...... There may have been more countries where this or something similar has happened, or it could be just a coincidence, what do you think?
Overall, I really like the song, it is definitely Rihanna's most iconic song, and I don't think she'll ever have another song as big as this, but I'm ready to be surprised. I like the music video although there's only a few links here and there. I definitely like the water idea and I can't wait to see more music videos by her.
This marks Britney's only cover which she released as a single. This song is the closest she has ever become to going down the rock route, however I very much advise her never to try another rock song, purely because she has a specific twang in her voice that is perfect for pop and dance music. And although she sings this cover really well, I'm not sure if I prefer it over anyone elses. This song has been covered so many times by so many people, it's a wonder that the original still exists. The original song was sung by the Arrows, however Joan Jett and the Blackhearts made the single most famous. The Arrows wrote it as a response to The Rolling Stones "It's Only Rock 'N Roll (But I Like It)", Joan Jett heard the Arrows performing it on their own show and soon decided to record it and release it as a single. Since then many, many artists have performed and released this song, the most recent single release of this song is Alex Gaudino & Jason Rooney's collaboration.
Britney Spears' single managed to get to number 1 here in the UK, and although nowadays that is considered as a high charting position, it was Britney's lowest charting until the recent releases of "Till The World Ends" and "I Wanna Go". I am really hoping that sometime in the future, Britney will get that UK number one that she has been unable to get in the past 6-7 years.
When Britney's version is played on the radio (which is rare), you can tell it is her version because of that twang that you can hear in the song. She sings the song well, although she definitely couldn't make it in the rock industry, and she definitely wouldn't suit being in a female-fronted band. She was asked to sing karaoke for the film Crossroads, and she had actually sang this song a few times in clubs that she's been to. She also publicly admitted that this song is one of her favourites.
The music video, is the typical rock band video, Britney is in the front singing the song, while rocking out and head-banging now and again. She had a band behind her, on drums and guitars and maybe other instruments. She is dressed in tight-fitting leather getup. It is a simple video with not a lot going on, Britney crawls, and jamms out and she plays air guitar and also smashes a real guitar. I have to admit though, it is kind of saved thanks to the clip on the motorcycle, I don't know why but it brings out a biker chick in Britney and it really works. However seems like a very low-budget music video and some unexplained things happen in the music video.
The drip drip drip of whatever is leaking makes no sense whatsoever, and doesn't really fit in with the lyrics of the song, however it's not a bad music video, although I do think they could have done a lot more. Maybe they could have set it in a bar that has it's own jukebox and she sings it there. Since the jukebox links perfectly with the line in the chorus: "put another dime in the jukebox baby".
Overall I love the song and it works perfectly with Britney's voice, every now and then. However the music video isn't so engaging and it definitely seems like they never actually thought it through. Honestly I would say that it definitely isn't one of Britney's top music videos, it may even be her worse, after a few shocking ones that have been released a few years ago. Anyway I think I have rated it fairly, and I hope you agree.
This is totally CLASSIC Britney Spears, you cannot get older than this (well apart from when she was in the Mickey Mouse Club). This was Britney's first ever release, all the way back in 1998, it seem so long ago now, and so many cheesy pop songs was being released around that time, and only a handful of artists managed to be propelled into stardom and fame. And Britney was one of them. She managed to get a number one with this song in every single country she released it in. Furthermore, at year-end charts she smashed it around the world, with this single managing to get high in the charts, as for the UK end charts she got number one, and it turned 2x platinum, her best selling single to date. Lets hope that someday one of her new and future singles can do just that, or at least get a number one, it has been an extremely long time since she managed to do just that.
This song was written by Max Martin, again he pops up in the world of Britney. She has used his songs quite a few times over the years, and he is becoming a well-known songwriter and producer. Britney is so flawless in what she does but over the years her fans have dropped and although she has gained many more, she has been unable to grab the important UK number ones. Max Martin co-wrote Britney's most recent single "I Wanna Go" and the music video definitely revisited the Britney we see in this video, only she shows how grown-up she has become. This music video kick-started her career, so it's only right if I review this right now.
It was Britney's personal idea for the music video to be the way it was, and the original idea (which was all centred around a cartoon) was scrapped. I like the whole idea of the fact that all of the clothes Britney used were all from Kmart and none of the costumes were over $17 (around £10.47), which makes it true and definitely interests the younger generation, and will constantly be interesting them, as the music video is probably the most played video of all time on the music channels. And it has been viewed more than 50 million times on YouTube.
I like the back flips and the other "gymnastic" moves, which I'm not sure if Britney did them or not..... I have questioned this ever since I've watched it. My other theory is that she did a front-flip and they reversed it as the people in the background are a little weird. However no ones going to tell us, so that is all my thoughts.
I also like the bit in the gymnasium where everyone creates a circle and do some dancing, which really looks amazing with the aerial camera. But what I like the most is the ending, where it flips back to the start as if she's just imagined the whole thing. This has been used (once again) in Britney's most recent video which was "I Wanna Go" as the exact same thing happens, how she day-dreamed everything that goes on. ALSO there is a tribute to this music video in another video of Britney's which was "If U Seek Amy" where she walks out at the end, and she's a house wife, and her "daughter" is wearing a similar school outfit. NOTE: All three songs and more was written by Max Martin. I hope to see more links in the future.
Overall this music video is great and works well with the song and lyrics. I don't understand why people would dislike it, but I presume everyone doesn't like the same things as everyone else. So I hope you all agree with this rating, as I'm pretty sure it definitely deserves it!
This music video is probably listed as THE BEST Britney Spears music video ever made. You can't possibly tell me you've never ever seen this music video, and surely everyone agrees that it is one of her best ones so far. But what makes it so good? Why is this song so amazing? And what makes it better than all of her other music videos? We'll soon find out.
This was Britney second single released from her fourth album "In The Zone". This song managed to get to No.1 in the UK charts, and the second most recent Britney single to get there. This single marks the height of her career, which has recently been going downhill, will she ever manage to get a number 1 again, in the future? We'll just have to wait and find out.
The director of this music video was someone called Joseph Kahn, he has worked with Britney a total of 3 times, all of the Britney music videos he has directed contains a storyline. The 3 music videos are: "Stronger", "Toxic" and most recently "Womanizer", these three music videos really stand above the rest and could easily show how well these two work together, but it also shows that Joseph Kahn's music videos are iconic in their own right.
The music video starts off with Britney as a flight attendant, getting a phone call (which relates to the very start of the song). After pouring champagne on a person, she leads a bold, overweight man to the bathroom and seduces him. She then removes the man's mask to reveal another person (Who, when I was younger, I thought was David Beckham). And steals a black pass from his pocket. Next she is riding on a motorbike, she has red hair and she is in a catsuit. Britney and the driver are in a futuristic Paris (which is a reference to "Blade Runner"), and they go past a woman and lifts up her dress (which is a link to Marilyn Monroe).
The narrative carries on, next she is in a lab called ironically "Toxic Industries", and she steals some poison, but then she triggers a laser trap, which then creates a series of lasers, she avoids these by doing iconic dance moves. Next she is scaling a building, to get to her unfaithful boyfriend, and slips him the poison, she then flies out the window and lands back in the aeroplane and winks at the camera. ALSO in the music video, there are snapshots of Britney naked and covered in diamonds, this can be considered a link to Kate Bush's music video of "The Man with The Child in his Eyes".
I really like this music video, as you can probably guess. It shows a story and although sometimes it doesn't really fit with what the song is about, it works really well. Her voice is perfect but it is reminiscent of the old Britney. She went through a stage that people list as the "Circus" stage, in which she was not Britney, and this made her lose a lot of fans. Now she is back, and with full-force, but has she really come back? I think so, but it's going to be difficult to prove to others. And if she wants that number 1 in the UK, she's going to have to prove herself. One perfect way is by going on to a talent show and sing LIVE. She has been criticised by the media as not singing live (one instance was while she was on the X Factor, she mimed to the lyrics of "Womanizer", and the media attacked her for that). She needs to prove to the UK, she is herself, and no one can do that, but her.
Overall this song deserved number 1, however compared to the new music out today it wouldn't have a standing chance, which might explain why "I Wanna Go" failed to make an impact in the UK chart this year, as both the songs are similar. I hope she finally gets a number 1 in the UK, it's been 7 almost 8 years since then! Also, and this I cannot believe, she has never had a number 1 album in the UK. This seems really surprising since she has released total of 10 albums (7 Studio albums, and 3 Compilation albums) and still no sign of a No.1! Anyway, I hope you all agree with my rating, I dropped a star because sometimes it didn't relate to the music.
As you may be aware of (if you've read any of my other posts), I have known about Britney ever since she released her first single: "...Baby One More Time". And I have to admit, this music video is probably one of my favourite yet. She has had lots of critical responses and a lot of difficulty in her life, but it definitely looks like she's taking control of it, which is really great.

And is probably the best single to describe her whole album, although, the album is quite a mixture of everything, and together it is blissfully one of Britney's best albums. I think this song is probably my 2nd favourite song from the album, and I really hope that her next single will be "How I Roll", but if it isn't I don't mind much since I really like this song. As for charting, it is currently climbing up the top 200 in the UK chart, however it is officially released next week, so hopefully the single will make an impact (I'm hoping for No.1 since the last time she was there was with "Everytime" and that was in 2004). As for her albums, she has never ever had a No.1 album, which really surprised me when I found out, I just hope that in the near future she'll get a No.1 album.
This song was written by Max Martin, Shellback and Savan Kotcha (Max Martin and Shellback helped Avril Lavigne write her whole album, and they also helped with Britney's latest album so it shows how interesting their songs can be). This song again hits out at the paparazzi, although many have complained that she is attacking them again. But in my opinion, they're the ones attacking her, did anyone not see the video footage of them following her all over the news? If she is constantly followed how can she have a life? The paparazzi are to blame for many deaths from Princess Diana to Amy Winehouse (possibly, this is all what I think and I could be completely wrong). So if everyone decided never to read a newspaper or magazine ever again, if everyone decided to never tune into the news, either on the radio or on the TV, would people (famous or not so famous) still be alive today? I personally think so.
The music video is AMAZING! It is one of the best Britney videos for a long time, and I really like the funny side of things. I love how Britney is styled, people say she reminds them of Avril Lavigne, especially with her different coloured hair extentions, however she reminds me of when she was younger and just starting in the music industry, I really like her looking this way and you really wouldn't expect her to do the things she does in the music video, which is what they wanted the impact to be like. Also, I think she looks really well, compared to her music videos when she was a little off her head and not quite right, she looks well on track and it's really nice to see her this way.
I love the start, it is a similar take on the old film: Half Baked, and it's really funny when she says "you're cool", it makes me laugh every time. I also like the t-shirt she is wearing, which is a cropped t-shirt of Mickey Mouse, which relates to when she was in "The New Mickey Mouse Club" which I never watched. I cannot believe the journalists would ask those sort of questions either and to be honest what sort of questions are they actually asking? Who would ask anything so stupid? So she walks out wearing studded combat boots (that I didn't think Britney would ever actually wear, but I really like them), and signs her album and grabs the guys ass, I like how he is so happy that he jumps in the air, to be honest I think anyone would be happy.
I like how she blows a kiss to a baby who's whistling along to the track, and then the amazing bit when she flashes for the policeman, only the whole street sees, and I love the shocked faces, especially the ginger kid as if he's never seen anything like that in real life hahahahahahaha. The policeman, who looks like Britney's Ex-Husband Kevin Federline, then decides to search Britney up and down her legs while she's bent over a car, then we get a flash and we see Britney walking away spinning handcuffs on her finger, while the policeman is buttoning up his shirt (I wonder what they've been up to..... And surely not in the street! That kid would have a heart attack!)
She is then surrounded by paparazzi, which must relate to her everyday life, which is kind of surprising as there is quite a few of them snapping photos without her permission (and yes I know that if you are a celebrity you're bound to have the paparazzi following you and taking pictures, but still...). So she smashes one camera, which I think is good for her, and then she runs away and climbs up onto a yellow taxi. Which is a little dramatic but then again.... And she swings her mike around and hits the paparazzi, which is obviously done by using special effects on the computer, but it is done well, and I can't help but watch again and again. I really like the idea of the cinema behind, which is showing "Crossroads 2: Cross Harder" which is such a good idea, and represents Britney's first debut film, "Crossroads". I like how it is similar to "Die Hard 2: Die Harder" which has to be the best sequel name ever. But does this suggest what everyone is thinking? Will there be a sequel to Crossroads? I sure hope so, I loved that film and have probably watched it too many times by now, but will there be a sequel? If they do decide to, then it's not too late, it could mark the decade anniversary of her first film debut......
I like how there's a link with "Terminator 2: Judgement Day", with the paparazzi creeping back up showing that they are robots and are prepared to get every shot possible. This is a super nice twist and sort of explains the paparazzi to people, it shows they don't care about anyone and so will do their best in their interests and not anyone else's. Then guess who comes along.... It's Guillermo Díaz, who starred in "Half Baked". He drives alongside Britney and tells her to jump in, to help her escape the paparazzi, she is then dressed in a pink bikini top, and dances while standing up (if you look into the background you can tell that they are in front of a "blue/green screen". While Guillermo drives he decides to pour milk over his head. THIS I DO NOT UNDERSTAND! Why do such a thing? If someone could help me I'd be happy to know the answer. Anyway.... Britney is a little turned on that he does such a thing, and then sparks fly from his chest and she realises he is a robot too.
I like the ending particularly, you are taken back to the interview with the journalists screaming at her, and so she thinks she has been day-dreaming. Then Guillermo says "no more questions" and Britney tells him about her dream, and he pretends to be stupid, and then, in a link to Michael Jackson's "Thriller", as Britney is lead away, he turns around and his eyes glowers red, and he laughs hard....... It is a brilliant ending, to go with one of Britney's most iconic music videos.
Overall I cannot fault this music video, except for the milk bit which I do not understand at all. This music video will probably be remembered again and again, and I can definitely see the music channels using this loads more times in the future. I hope you all agree that my rating is fair, and this music video definitely does deserve it!
I have been a fan of Billie Piper ever since she first came out in 1998. The first time I ever heard of her, was when I was sitting infront of the TV (only a kid back then) and I was watching the music channels. It was probably the first time I had ever watched a music channel, and I remember this coming up, it was shown straight after Britney Spears' "... Baby One More Time", and I loved it straight away. And to be honest I still love it now!
Billie Piper was first a singer back in the late 1990's/early 2000's, but shot to fame with her acting when she came into the new revised series of Doctor Who, where she played Rose Tyler. But when this song was first released it went straight to No.1 in the UK charts, and she holds the record for the youngest ever solo female artist to have a UK No.1 hit, and it doesn't look like anyone will beat that record in the next few years. Could she still be holding that title after she's gone from this world? Who knows? With the amount of young singers nowadays, she may not hold the record for much longer. The only other female artist I can think of who ever came this close to beating Billie Piper was JoJo, who managed to get to No.2 with Leave (Get Out). Not long after her greatest hits album, she disappeared from the world of music, and years later appeared on our screens as the new Doctor's Assistant, in the new series of Doctor Who. She became a character everyone loved, and a character that, when appears in a one-off episode, gains a hell of a lot of ratings to the BBC drama series.
She has been in many films since she's left music, and although she was never passionate about music, there is still a slot for her in our charts. She will probably be lost to music for the rest of her life, and music will miss her so much, but if her heart is in acting, then go for it, but she will sadly be missed, as Chris Moyles proved one day, when he tried to interest listeners into downloading "Honey To The Bee", back in 2007, and guess what? She managed to get to No.17, which is such a surprise, and totally proves that the music industry has a slot still for her, and her fans will help her in anyway possible. She could easily become an actor & singer, many American artists and Actors do it so it's about time Britain started, and Billie could definitely prove herself.
This song is the cheesy sort of pop that I was brought up on. It was very common in the late 90's to have this sort of music playing. The song is about freedom and doing the things you want to do hence "because we want to". It is definitely cheesy, but it's good in the way that is interesting,
The music video is imaginative and clever and links a lot with Doctor Who, many fans reckon there is a lot of links, from an early Cyberman to a Judoon, she was obviously destined to appear in Doctor Who, only then no one could have possibly have known. I like how Billie has "super powers", she came from a UFO, which definitely is Doctor Who like, and at just 15 she loved throwing her names on things, such the billboard poster.
I definitely like the dance routines, it was very common then as kids liked to copy the dance moves and try to imitate them, and yes, I did do that back then too. But it was how it was, now, about a decade later it is starting all over again, you'll getting a lot of girl groups, boy bands, and mix groups coming up with dance moves that kids are likely to copy, and with the added use of the fact that bands from the 90's are re-forming, cheesy pop could be making a return in a whole new style and format. Could this be the perfect time for Billie to come back to the music world? I really hope so.
The camera is a little on the jumpy side, but that is to be expected, and the graphics are not the best, however I remember thinking WOW at the time as back then they were pretty good, however if the music video was ever re-done it would definitely be improved a hell of a lot.
Overall I am giving it a reasonable rating, because I think the camera could have focused more on the dancing, as I remember having to watch the music channels a hell of a lot of times waiting and waiting for this song to come on so I could perfect my dance moves, that is my only problem, but otherwise it's been interesting rating a music video which is over 10 years old.
